The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition (2009)

Poor Performance on high end system
I have a GTX 1060, an AMD 6350, and 8 gigs of ram, but somehow in places like the mage's guilds, I get 25 fps. I only have a few mods running. I managed to get my framerate back to 30+ by removing Immersive Interiors but things are still pretty sluggish for a game that is 11 years old.

Im no technical genious, but i guess its just an old game that doesn't run as well anymore

I consider 8GB RAM at the bottom end anymore especially if you are running Windows 10. A 8GB RAM system seems like a dinosaur to me. I run 32 GB RAM and routinely use 14-15 GB when running at max. My suggestion is you look at your underlying RAM first. You can speed things up significantly by replacing a hard disk with a SSD. I run a 1 TB SSD which significantly increases performance. In essence everything I run is in memory. Either on a SSD or in RAM.

I can read, copy and write a backup to a 5GB database in 8 seconds.

PS. I run a GTX 970m card. Not nearly as good as yours and I have no difficulty playing any game on Steam. Which means it is your other hardware which is "probably" bogging you down.

Last though. It has been my experience that anytime more than 50% of your available RAM is being used by the system it starts getting boggy. Hence why I have 32 GB RAM. It is so I can mantain maximum performance when using 14-15 GB. The GPU needs the CPU and if the CPU is being bogged down both are going to suffer.

Oblivion only uses 2 gigs of ram, unless you force 4. That isn't the issue. As for an SSD, I already use one. Not super reliable. And my hardware isn't what's bogging me down, I can run the new DOOM and other new-gen games at 60 fps on high-ultra settins.

In some cases this happens, when game are using integrated graphics card.

No you don't. Oblivion is a 32 bit program, and as such can never use any more than 4 gig of RAM on a 64 bit OS. And that's after making it Large Address Aware with some third party utility. Otherwise it will never use more than 2 gig.

Wow, you're just full of misinformation. Windows 10 itself only uses up about 1 gig of RAM. With a maximum of 4 gig for the game on top of that, anything over 5 gig is overkill and not necessary. You really should learn how things actually work before trying to give people advice.

Yes, I understand that. However, sometimes, when your PC have access to two graphical cards, game can choose to use your integrated instead of GTX 1060.
Sometimes mods can mess with your game too.

It's old

No reason it shouldn't run good, the game is pretty old, I have Win10 64bit, i3-6100, and GTX750ti 8GB RAM, game runs fine. I'm not using any mods or anything though.
So my guess is its a problem comming from one of the mods possibly.

8gb's of ram is still overkill for a lot of games in 2017, theres still no reason to go beyond, unless your job requires it (3d rendering and such)

Bro AMD FX doesn't have an integrated graphics card. Forget it. I don't have one.

It is your CPU. Oblivion runs poorly on all hardware in areas with lots of NPCs, maybe a high overclock on an Intel chip could hold beyond 30 FPS all the time.

Upgrade your CPU and you will see a huge gain. For Bethesda's games get the strongest CPU in single thread performance you can get.
Arrancar Jun 25, 2017 @ 9:23am
Oblivion will use only 1 core of your CPU, it is old game after all.
I have i5-4460 3.2 Ghz, 16 GB RAM, GTX 970 GB, Win 10 and I have 60 FPS almost everywhere. The most problematic areas are outdoor areas with many NPC characters - IC Market district(surprisingly I have better FPS in IC than other cities) and Cities like Leyawiin etc. I will get drops below 60 FPS there. Also many NPC characters fighting will drop FPS as well, for example Bruma Battle.
But it is surprising that you can barely get 30 FPS, when you have better specs than me. I suggest trying OBSE plugin called Oblivion Stutter Remover(set both minimum and maximum FPS in .ini file to 60), it might help you boost your FPS.

The advice from Arrancar is good, but I would also try this mod:
http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/45576/?
I don't know what "a few mods" are for you, but it could help you, 'cause Oblivion sucks a little bit, when it comes to RAM-usage in combination with "a few mods".
