Do not rely on only one single save, as saves can sometimes become corrupted.
As a general rule of thumb, always try to save your game before starting and after completing any quest if possible and after obtaining any item you want to keep. It is also a good idea to save your game before exiting an area as loading through the door may initiate a crash that will wipe out your progress.
The reason why you want to save before starting new quests is that sometimes problems can occur that cause CTD's when talking to NPC's related to the quest and having a save to load before starting the quest can sometimes help fix the problem. Saving the game after quests will help avoid repeating things over again if the game crashes and potentially losing good items that are lost because of a crash.
Have you tried starting a new game and saving to see if the new save works?
You can try deleting your Oblivion.ini and see if it fixes the problem. If not you can try removing the save from the folder and allow the Steam Cloud to replace it. Sometimes, although rarely, the Steam Cloud may have a non corrupted version of the save.
Other than that, you may be sol.
