anyway to get lockpicks not from thieves gulid
I just started a new character Nord fighter - magic secondary - blade light armor just for fun. Was not planning to join thieves guild till much later in game but have run out of lockpicks. Have spells for very easy - easy locks but hate leaving those average chests behind. Is there anyway to get large quantity of lockpicks early game to tide me over until I get my magic up. Without joining thieves guild?

You could always use the console; hit the tilde key and type player.additem 0000000a and then the number of picks that you want, then hit enter.

Sorry never used the console before having trouble getting it to work. Is that the exact format I enter it in?
player additem 0000000a xxx
by ' player ' do you mean the characters name?

Nope, you literally type player.additem

NOT player additem

The period is important

1. Head along the road northeast from leyawinn.

2. Visit nocturals shrine, and complete her quest (located near leyawinn also). You don't need to offer her anything, but you will need to be level 10.

3. Her reward is the Skeleton Key: an unbreakable lockpick.

That's the best way to deal with the lockpick problem. Before level 10, there's this guy, who hangs outside the north wall of the imperial city. :)

Goblins are bound to carry lockpicks, along with bandits. Those are your best sources.

Shady Sam, the aforementioned npc who hangs outside the northern edge of the imperial city, sells 30 lockpicks at a time.

Just start joining test and do not win the contest, so you can buy as many lockpicks as you want from Armand Christophe every 5 gold.
and shady sam as Marko says.

I used to use Dome stone South of Imperial City.
Tower stone give you a greater power to open hard lock.
My new character thief aquire this power.
It helps in early stage thief.

Shady Sam hiding outside the Imperial City sells lockpicks, you can also buy them from the fence from the Thieves Den DLC (Doesn't require you to be in the Thieves Guild) and if you happen to be in the Dark Brotherhood there is a merchant there selling lockpicks and poisons.

Went looking for this Shady Sam character just out of curiousity never would have found him if he was not mentioned here. As well as selling lockpicks he also sells poisons and usefull potions like cure disease-poison and I suspect he will buy stolen goods though I did not have any on me to test at time.
