Master retort?
I made a mistake to make shock damage poisons out of ogres teeth and now they are super heavy, at that time I had all expert alchemy equipment. I looked up on the wiki and it said your potions will always weigh as much as your FIRST one you make with the equipment, and the only way really is to get better equipment. Well last night found a master retort in a necro dungeon and was super stoked, but when I make the shock potion it still has same effect as before and worst of all, still wieghs a ton. I am master lvl alchemist =[

I think you also need to have Mortar & Pestle of higher qualities as well.

The weight and cost of a potion are set the first time you make one with that effect. The game then uses that FormID for any new potions with the same name and effect.

To make the game consider something a "new" potion (and make a new FormID) there has to be a change to the effects, the duration or magnitude of an effect, or the name.

The usual way you escape this problem is that either your Alchemy skill goes up a point and makes all your effects slightly stronger/longer, or you get better Alchemy gear that does that.

So, making a potion with less heavy ingredients and naming it something else will get you a less heavy potion. You will have to type in the name every time, since it will not autofill that for you.

If/when you find any more Master level Alchemy gear, be careful to use lighter ingredients.

Usually the first thing I do when I find better gear, especially if my skill is already Master level, is try to make as light as possible potions for the effects I use most commonly (like Restore Health) so that if I use heavier ingredients later by accident I don't have to worry about this issue.

A Retort will only effect the outcome of POSITIVE effects in a potion, and so will have no influence on NEGATIVE effects when making a poison. Mortar and Pestle, Calcinator, and due to a bug Alembic, will all increase the quality of Poisons in Oblivion, but NOT retort. So keep looking!

Remember too that you can combine multiple ingredients together to create a poison that deals more than one type of damage. Health/Fire/Shock is one such possible combination, and it doesn't require heavy ingredients. :)

what your talking about with potion weight, has to do with the ingredients used for making potions, not your level, not the level of your equipment, etc. You can make fatigue potions with many different ingredients. They have different weights depending on the ingredients used. If you make the same identical stat potions, and the first one you make is with ingredients that make a low weight potion, then all the others of that exact same quality will "stack" with the first. Same as if you make a high weight potion first they stack into it.

So the weight has nothing to do with your skill level, type of equipment you use, etc it has to do with the ingredients. Of course this gets more difficult when you combine multiple ingredients and functions.

So what your talking about, shock damage potions. Save your game, and try making shock potions from different ingredients. See which combo gives you a low weight potion. Then always make sure to just keep 1 of that potion in your inventory so any more you make will stack into it.

Of course if you aren't 100 alchemy with the same equipment your potion strengths will vary as you level up, etc and that won't work if the power changes. But thats the best way to keep low weight potions at all times. Just keep 1 low weight in inventory to have others stack up on.

Got master mortar and pestle and alembic, made shock potion with ginko and mushroom @ 0.1 weight, much better. Still can't find master calcinator.

Yeah duration or strength has to change for the weight to change/ update make sure you figure that out before you get all master equipment!

I noticed the potions cure disease and cure poison will never change weight from the very first time you made them, but it doesn't matter since you can just eat the ingredient.

I do believe you can buy a Master Calcinator from one of the mages in a Mage's Guild hall, I can't remember which one.

From vendors, it is only possible to get Expert equipment. All Master alchemy equipment can only be found as loot.

There are some caves, such as the Temple of the Ancestor Moths and Rockmilk Cave, which have a large number of boss chests, so continually visiting these caves might increase the chances of finding one.
