I really like Clannfear midgame. It is one of my favorite. It doesn't have alot of HP, but does good melee damage, has 20% reflect damage to increase its damage, and moves around quickly.
Daedroth and Frost Atronach are also good choices for variety.
At higher levels it is hard to say.
I generally favor Shambles and Hunger summons as they are usually more cost efficient then most of the other summons and deal good damage. The Storm Atronach is a decent alternative.
Edit*
I generally do not use the Dremora Lord, because it has weak melee damage and even lower unarmed damage. The Apprentice Hunger does almost the same melee damage as the Master Dremora Lord. That is how weak it is, but the Dremora Lord does get a lot of style points.
Mine? Probably replete shambles. Those guys hit like a truck. Alternatively, storm elementals, especially against other daedra.
Clanfear are decent if you boost them with a custom health regeneration and shield spell, or even more reflect damage if you've obtained it from the Gatekeeper. They're also the only summon I could slip under the gatehouse porticullis and into the Kvatch castle courtyard to soften up resistance without opening the gate. Took dozens to get the job done.
The silliest, though, is 3 second scamps. Good for rapid training, too.
Depending on what kind of character you have, you can get corresponding summons. Scamps are surprisingly useful even past apprentice level. Not only is the spell relatively cheap, but it doesn't burden your magicka pool that much.
Here's my short list [doesn't include expansions summons]:
Apprentice Level: Skeleton [20 HP, ~4 damage]. Its cheap, and if you have Conjuration as a major you start with it anyway. A good practice spell too for armour training. Zombie and Scamp are more powerful, but cost more magicka.
Journeyman: Headless Zombie [175 HP, 27 damage]. Slow, but tanky, and hits like a truck. It is possible to be able to summon this at level 4 with some characters, at which point it basically one-hits everything it sees.
Expert: Clannfear [180 HP, 36 damage]. Very fast, hits like a train, reflects melee damage. The best 'Guard Dog' summon evar. Sadly isnt very tanky and is vulnerable to Paralysis.
Master: Storm Atronach [350 HP, 27 damage]. The cheapest Master summon in terms of magicka cost/seconds summoned. Tanky, immune to paralysis, great vs packs of other enemies. Is unfortunately quite slow though, so dont expect it to chase and hunt down things like a Clannfear. Despite doing less 'damage' than a Clannfear, it attacks faster, so its DPS is probably about the same.
The expensive Wild Card: Gloom Wraith. 500 Health, a ton of immunities, a 120pt Absorb Health Spell, lots of Frost Damage, and a 15 Second Silence Curse. Can it run fast? It basically doesn't move. But the best tank? This thing.
Here's the full list. Looking at the list, there's a few level dependent summons in Shivering Isles that look nice. Voracious Hunger could be fun:
