Don't feel bad about getting lost. I think everybody gets lost, even people who have played the game for years. You can always tell where you are and which way you're pointing by looking at the map. Just in case you didn't know, you can click on the map to change it from world view to local view. That will help a lot.
You'll need to learn to talk to NPCs, click on every highlighted keyword in the chat, and really pay attention to what they tell you. Very often the only directions you'll recieve will be what you're told by an NPC. Most of the salient points should be written in your journal after the conversation, but you still need to "listen" to what they say, because the journal's not all that detailed.
Major cities should be marked as you discover them. I think in a few cases, NPCs will "mark your map" for you when they tell you about certain places. Don't expect that every time, though.
I don't know about combat mods, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are some. Look on TESNexus and Planet Elder Scrolls. I hear those are good places to find mods.
Have fun, and don't be so afraid to get lost and to explore. That's the beauty of the game.
I like the game as it is, so I don't use any mods that change any part of the gameplay or the look of the world. I do hate the character models, though, so I've begun using Better Bodies and Better Faces and I like them very much. Combat is certainly different than you're used to, but you do become much more accurate as you gain experience with that weapon and combat style. For example, if you chose long blade as a major or minor skill, but not short blade, then don't go around using daggers, Use long blades so that you advance in that skill.
Maybe
2. Enhanced Combat
Start with those for now. I love Morrowind played the vanilla version so many times, but once I found mods it got so much better these mods are great for beginners the overhaul has some great mods jam packed into it those are the 2 mods I use even tho I have installed over 750 mods in my heavy modding times with Morrowind, it does get tricky when you add mods coz they interfere with others, need to be set in the right order, etc.. So since your just beginning use those 2 mods I listed and dont use quest trackers Morrowind is the best of the games for exploration IMO. Have fun and dont worry about the Overhaul it automatically installs everything in the right order for ya look it up on youtube. Enjoy! =]
I use the Morrowind Overhaul 3.0 as well, but I'll take a look at the Enhanced combat because, frankly, the combat system in Morrowind sucks.
Further, mods that enhance graphics are okay with me. Gameplay enhancers too, but I don't want them to change Morrowind too much, because I still like the vanilla style in a certain way.
Saying that you shouldn't use any mods is a bit exaggerated, as long as they are lore-friendly and don't change too much of the original game's essence mods are good.
1. Morrowinds Riches Mod
It makes it so all vanilla merchants have their original gold value multiplied by 10. So long are the days where you have to rely on the creeper & mudcrab to sell your high valued ebony, glass or even Dadriac, It also adds a merchant in the starting town that has a wopping gold value of 45k.
2. Join All Houses Mod
Does exactly as it says. Allows you to join the 3 great houses.
Something you veterans should note when giving us noobs a hard time about having trouble with navigation. The minimap is absolutely tiny at this resolution. I can cover the whole thing with a cheez it. I can barely see the arrow which is really distracting when I'm trying to take in this awesome world.
Tell the noobs you encounter about how you can pin the world map. THAT will help them a lot. (Right click, resize and reposition the world map to your taste, click the icon in the upper right of the map, it will now stay up when you right click out of the menus. You can unpin it the same way. Its no quest markers and I share your pain on that but you're only going to be mocked by these 'veterans' if you bring that up.)
