The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

I find Morrowind a little hard
I played Oblivion, then Skyrim, and I thought I would get Morrowind and Daggerfall as well. Mostly I wanted to get the background, in the later games there are many references to happenings of the earlier ones.

However, after playing TES:O and TES:S, I just can't figure out Morrowind. I don't mind the graphics, I even got a couple of mods that make the game pretty acceptable visually, but interface, interaction, and especially combat. I'm lost. I've played for quite a while and I'm still unable to use magic. Instructions flash by in a popup and if you don't pay attention you're fried.

Let alone Daggerfall. I was willing to put up with the dreadfully primitive graphics but again the same problem; controls and interfaces. Combat! I'm quite unable to kill a rat. You have to physically slash and hack with the mouse! I imagine maybe it was easier with ball mice, but optical ones don't respond too well. Or maybe I don't respond too well. After doing my best effort for a few frustating hours, I scratched this game as totally unplayable.

This is not the case with Bethesda's other similar series, Fallout. I also went backwards with that one: First I played New Vegas, then Fallout 3, then I went to Fallout 1 and 2. However, F1 and 2 are a barrel of fun. They are extremely enjoyable even coming from playing graphically advanced F3 and FNV and no problem with controls. I play them all the time when I have a break in my workplace.

I felt the same way about the combat when i first played morrowind, but overtime i accepted it. believe me it is a really challenging game when you first start but when you level up and work your skills up the combat will be alot better and it will make for a better experience.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Although I got Morrowind after getting used to Daggerfall, so it wasn't too bad. But the change from Skyrim (my first TES game) to Daggerfall was beyond drastic.
In Skyrim, every swing/attack hits. In DF and MW, your skill actually affects your hit percentage. That was a huge difficulty, and to be honest I didn't really like it, but by now I've come to understand and accept that it's in fact a lot better and more realistic that way. I specialize in Long Blade, and am terrible at using other kinds of weapons. That's fine.

I totally agree on the dumbing down thing. Skyrim is my all-time favourite game, but combat is one of the things the older TES games (at least I, II and III) get better.

Yeah, one thing people fail to notice is that at low Fatigue (green bar) you can't do anything, not even kill the mudcrabs around the starting town.

To add to this, a low stamina/fatigue can also effect your ability to pick locks and the like.

I have found Morrowind (coming from Skyrim) really required me to spend a lot of time reading about the levelling system and combat system. I play with a notepad to keep track of skill gains, etc so that I can maximise level-ups. I find it an incredibly difficult game too at times, as far as I understand that is partly because a lot of hostiles aren't leveled so if you blunder around too early you're toast.

Don't forget the siltstriders and other transport will safely get you around the map. Again you will want some trusty notes as to what goes where so you can plot an efficient route.

Grab a house mod or some online advice about safe places to sleep. You will still be at risk of the assassin attacking, but if you save before you sleep you can reload and try again if you die. Maybe he won't spawn the next time :)

About other weapon skills, stick with one at first and when you're hitting your targets well enough, you can go to some trainers and train another weapon skill to at least up to 20 (IMO), then use that weapon skill on weak opponents to train it.

As for a house, Balmora Hlaalo Manor is a good one.

I've found that Morrowind requires much walking. At first, that's fine - exploration, killing creatures you can kill - but after a while, I just wanted to do some quests quickly, which made all the walking annoying. I've installed a mod, Speed and Stamina[morrowind.nexusmods.com], which increases the speed only slightly, but it also stops drain stamina while running. This so you don't have to wait after traveling (running) to make sure you have the stamina. And as has been said, much depends on stamina (to succeed).

Speaking of houses, how does safe storage work in this game? Can I leave my stuff in some chest or barrel? I just killed the murderer in Seyda Neen and I was wondering if I could take over his house as a temporary residence (I can sleep and it has storage).

Most chests and barrels are safe, but some chests in houses will apparently change the ownership flags so they will effectively become stolen when you take them back out.

If you have used Creation Kit at all the Morrowind Construction Set is similar (and a bit simpler to use for house building), btw.

best thing to do is find a house(one normaly really close to stilt strider[ex. council club, balmora]) and kill everyone in it and just drop your items on the ground. its safer to just put em on the ground then in a container and that way you won't forget where it is. walk in, see a huge ass pile in your face of random junk.

I always just picked one of the rooves in Balmora and neatly aranged all my loot, and it doesn't go anywhere. Also if you feel you are not going fast enough just get the boots of blinding speed and a 1 sec resist magic 100 spell. This gives you over 200 speed and you can zoom across the map pretty quickly.

I'm hooked! This game is a gem. Of course, I have improved it using several mods that make better bodies and better faces, and high res terrain, and running faster, but besides that the game itself has something addictive...

Glad you like it, and don't worry about modding it, modding is intended in Morrowind.
