The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Should I get Oblivion or Morrowind?
Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls game and I like it a ton. I've beaten the game and its DLC, and I thought that I might go back and experience Oblivion or Morrowind. I would like to get both, so this is really "Which should I get first?" If you could please list the Pros and Cons of both games to help me decide, that would be great. Also note that I enjoy a deep story more than amazing graphics or gameplay, and I have heard that Morrowind's combat, for lack of a better term, sucks, so if you could explain its combat to me, that would be great.

Morrowind with the overhaul mod. Just wish it worked with steam community so I could take some screenshots for everyone to see.
You can still take screenshots. MGE XE (which comes with the overhaul) has that functionality. Run mgexegui. Under graphics tab, do the necessary adjustments. The default key should be F12, just like Steam overlay.
In case you're still wondering, I'll go ahead and list my opinion of both.

Oblivion has better graphics and better combat than Morrowind does, but in my opinion Oblivion's atmosphere just doesn't seem as good as Morrowind's nor is it as interesting. Much of Cyrodiil is nothing more than fields of grass with some tree's thrown in and then there's Bruma which is just snowy; the exception to this is the the Shivering Isles, which actually does feel like an interesting place. Another problem with Oblivion is level scaling; literally everything levels up with you, so you'll have level 50 bandits when you reach level 50. What truly makes Oblivion a great game in my eyes is its mods, because not only can they fix the level scaling problem, but they also just add a lot of content that can make Cyrodiil a more interesting place. In fact, I'd say a modded Oblivion is an even better game than Skyrim. Look into overhaul mods like OOO and MMM and possibly unique landscapes, but there are plenty of other mods as well that you can install to make Oblivion a better game.

Morrowind obviously has worse graphics since it's older and the combat isn't nearly as good, but it has its good points and out of the two games I'd say I like unmodded Morrowind more than unmodded Oblivion. With giant mushrooms, telvanni structures, and numerous other things Morrowind is a very alien looking place and compared to Cyrodiil in Oblivion it is a very interesting place to explore. It also has much more variety in its areas with swamplands, forests, volcanic areas, ashlands, and even the snowy land of Solstheim. Morrowind also has a much better storyline than Oblivion and you get a lot more choice, since you can kill anyone you want, even people needed to advance the main quest; however, that will indeed break the main quest. Morrowind's mods aren't quite up to par with Oblivion's, but it does have plenty of amazing mods and some of these fix problems with the game. I'd suggest Morrowind Code Patch for anyone, but the graphics overhaul and Tamriel Rebuilt(which adds a LOT of content), are both worth looking into and there are plenty of other good mods too.

Overall both are good games and with mods they are great, but it is largely a matter of what you are looking for. If you want better graphics and combat and an amazing game if you mod it, then Oblivion is your answer. If you want a good story, an interesting place to explore, and a great game even without mods but you don't mind old graphics and an outdated combat system, then you'll want Morrowind. But whichever game you do choose, I'd highly suggest grabbing mods to make the games more enjoyable.

lol you don't beat a game like The Elder Scrolls, it's to be enjoyed. I've had many hours a gaming pleasure from III, IV, and V, it can be a tailored RPG experience and a game to 'beat'
Someone, give this man a medal!

Thank you!
Also, where would I grt mods for Morrowind and Oblivion? I get all of my Skyrim mods off of the Workshop.

Morrownd hands down. Oblivion was basically a skyrim test, so imagine skyrim but not as good. Morrowind you're in store for a totally different experience. Keep in mind this is vanilla Morrowind and Oblivion. I'm just basing this off the games themselves and not any mods used to alter or enhance.

You aren't concerned with graphics: Good, Morrowind's aren't great. But let me tell you man, thousands will agree with me when I say that doesn't even matter. The game is so good nobody cares. Oblivion's are of course better, but again, Morrowind is so good nobody cares.

You want story? You have any idea how much more rewarding it is when you actually have to find a quest location rather then blindly follow an arrow? Not to mention the fact that because you have to read, you might pay closer attention. Oblivion is the same as Skyrim, dialogue, quest marker, repeat. Not to say it's bad, I loved the game, just Morrowind wins.

Combat: Okay yes, Morrowind's combat sucks at first glance. It ends up dissolving into chops until the person dies. But the spell system is way more advanced then either oblivion or skyrim because at this point they didn't restrict you on what effects you can put on spells. You can literally combine anything, from opening locks to paralyzing people. Oblivion has better melee combat, but they took out many many spell effects that we used to have (ahem levitation).

Final note: You can't fast travel in Morrowind, so be prepared to fell just how enormous this game is.

In all honesty Morrowind to me is much better than Oblivion or Skyrim. Skyrim is pretty to look at but all chars tend to have the same skills used. Bethesda is slowly letting the RPG part of TES go. From Morrowind to Oblivion then on to Skyrim. Less RPG more Action/HacknSlash
Now, im not gonna bash Oblivion because thats where i jumped into TES games. From there i went to Arena, Daggerfall, Skyrim then Morrowind.
And ive gotta say, Morrowind is by far the best one in terms of gameplay, replay value, and challenging.
Now, many people think the Morrowind map is huge but the truth is, the chars run/walk slow so it creates the illusion of a large map. But i dont find that bad at all, I love it. ;)

It's okay that there are no quest markers if I get a good idea of where something is. Also, do you get a general area of where something is marked on your map?
So, should I be a spellsword or straight up be Mr.Wizard?
That's okay, I don't use fast travel that much in Skyrim anyway.

NPCs who give you quests will often mark something close to your objective on your map. They'll give you directions from there and it's up to you to find it. They usually give good directions and usually it's saved to your journal. But you have to learn to navigate the journal, too :)

The journal is super hard to navigate, isn't it?
In the journal, there's a quests link that list all of your active quests. That tab is important and really useful, because filing through the journal to find things can be a huge pain.

There's a topics link, too. So if you're looking for something you've already talked to an NPC about you can look it up alphabetically. It's not so bad once you get used to it.

Okay, thanks. But still, should I be a spellsword, or Mr.Wizard?
