On my current playthrough I am an Imperial Veteran (custom class) and have joined house Hlaluu and the imperial legion, I have moved into the house where you have to get the land deed in Gnisis. Seeing as its where the joinable legion is I moved myself and my followers there, but when I rebuild raven rock I will move there with my followers in tow.

If I'm playing TR I use Aurelia Draconis' house in Old Ebonheart. Otherwise I just take over a room in Ald'ruhn Mages Guild.

I used to always "take over" Dura gra-Bol's house in Balmora.
In my recent Playthroughs I found a couple of nice new locations:
- Vos, Thilse Aralas's Farmhouse (the inhabitant moved in with her neighbour...)
- Vivec, St. Delyn Waist North-Two (empty, small house)
- Yasamsi (I liked the idea of my Vampire living in a cave)
- Ihinipalit, Shrine (Vivec, St. Delyn Underworks)

Hlaalo Manor is usually my go to. But I've also used Ghorak manor, even with the company around. I've also take over the guard towers in ald'ruhn for speedier playthroughs, its right next to both the mages guild and stilt striders if im not flying/ using Divination. Ahnassi's house is my favorite, though.

Typically the stronghold for whichever great house I join.

Until that point, it's usually something nearby whatever I'm doing. Hlaalo manor in Balmora or the widow's hut outside Gnisis for example, but I wouldn't really furnish them as it were.

If we were including mods, I'd primarily go with the Telvanni stronghold from Building Up Uvirith's Grave, combined with the other big Uvirith mod that I can't currently recall the name of*, or the Wayfarer's Rest Inn.

*Edit* Uvirith's Legacy and Tel Uvirith Underground. BUUG's exteriors/town building, with Legacy's interior stronghold and Underground's underground.

Rather than using his floor and his bed i currently downloaded a simple mod of an empty chest in Caius' hut for my stuff, then like a nomad i wander and crash at whatever inn i come across.

There is the Dunmer stronghold Hlormaren east of Balmora. Clear out the first two levels of hostiles, then you can decorate the fort as you see fit. There's also a Propylon chamber, so once you get the Master Index, you can set your Recall there and then you have a way to quickly reach a Mage's Guild guide, or Almsivi Intervention to Balmora and use the silt strider or guild guide.
I usually just squat in some empty apartment in Vivec.

Other than the Great House strongholds, I never pick the same place twice.
Ive shacked up with Ahnassi when I was a thief, took over Ienas' house in Ald Ruhn, or Vodunius' house in Seyda Neen. Once I lived in that abandoned shack way out past Gnar Mok.
It depends on the character.

I shall have to start the game up again at some part to remind myself as it's been a while but I always used to turn to a mod for that kind of thing as I remember.

I had looked into using mods but every single one of them was like "Here's a house on the outside! But a literal dungeon sized mansion on the inside! Amazing! It has everything!"

I just wanted a house.

I ended up taking over Vori's house or whatever their name is, in Balmora and used the console commands to redecorate it to my preferences.
