Missing hits on monsters
I have been playing this morrowind for quite a while but i was always wondering why do you keep missing your sword swings?

I have played this game since it was on the original xbox. If your a lower level (1-10) your going to miss. Until you build up your guy. Believe me, it will get better. This game is way more realistic than skyrim or oblivion IMO. Good luck.

why does your charcter miss 50% of the time in DND...Rpg's in general have you missing alot

I do not own Morrowind on Steam, however I can say that it is way more RP heavy than Skyrim. Unlike Skyrim, in Morrowind almost everything relies on your skill level. The higher the skill level, the higher the chance to hit your target. At lower levels, you will most of the time miss your target. This mechanic is what divides the non-hardcore RP players, from the RP hardcore fans.

For meele weapons Ive noticed if you swing your weapon next to their right leg it will come up at an angle and will have a chance hitting them. Also for bows I always have to aim a little to the side to try and land a hit. The higher your skills the higher chance youll have at hitting your target.

It's based off your skill with that weapon and your opponent's melee skills as well. Even at a really high level, if you're using a longsword with a high Long Blade skill, you'll still miss a lot if you're fighting an equally talented opponent. Believe me, I bought the game on its original release and played it for years. One of the most frustrating parts of fighting a really skilled enemy like Umbra was watching your warrior with nearly-perfect Long Blade skills just miss repeatedly while fighting him.

Even the game developers have stated that the combat mechanics are the biggest weak point in the game; I personally use mods that alter it while still retaining some semblance of fairness. One of the senior developers behind the game said in an interview once that he "didn't think players would spent so much time in combat," so the melee combat engine wasn't a huge priority compared to the other elements of the game.

^What Ninjabutter said. It also helps if you keep your Stamina bar filled when you expect a fight.
Stamina influences every skill, so casting spells, swinging your weapon or picking a lock will be much more succesful if your stamina is full.
Ninjabutter Dec 27, 2013 @ 6:33pm
Yeah, true; Stamina means a lot more in Morrowind than it did in Oblivion or Skyrim. If you're a melee fighter and your would-be victim hasn't spotted you yet, chill a minute and regenerate your Stamina before attacking, and when you do attack, if you can simply walk into battle, do it; don't run unless there's a reason (like someone is shooting at you with a crossbow). If the other guy has seen you, great! Let him run at you and deplete his own Stamina while you wait there motionless like a batter on home plate. You'll have an immediate advantage if you're starting the fight at full Stamina and the other guy isn't.

It is a struggle at the start of the game, always try to stack up the weapon you have the highest stats for, and keep that stamina bar above 50%... on the flipside once your block skill reaches 100 you will autoblock multiple attackers at superhuman speed, sometimes the broken mechanic works in your favor.

No - in top view rpgs you have a chance to hit because in such games it's hard to make a proper system involving footwork, parrying or blocking => those actions are stored into some "stats"; even harder in turn-based rpgs. In 1st person and 3rd person* games with melee combat mechanics, you are not missing when you land a proper hit because otherwise it will look awkward (Morrowind is one of the few examples). But again, I don't play TES games for their combat mechanics, but for exploration and lore - afterall, whenever a TES game was released, there are already games (mostly arpg) with better combat mechanics.

*I'm talking about the generic "3rd person" perspective in videogames (isometric games for example are excluded).

PS: I have nothing to add to this thread because these guys did a good job explaining why you'll always miss even with a high skill.
PPS: Could anyone activate their boxed edition game? I ask this because I own it (well, in fact there are 3 keys: morrowind, tribunal and bloodmoon), but I cannot activate it on steam.

No, I already tried. Turns out that you can only do that with a select group of games; a game being supported by Steam doesn't necessarily mean you can register your key for it with Steam and add it to your digital library. Morrowind isn't on the list, so even if you have a valid key, you can only add it as a non-Steam game, not actually add it to your library.

why, i buy anthalogy and at first was thinking that i would need all the time cd, but as i check code it was for TES III, TESIV, TES V

in hit and miss subject dont forget agility and luck, how far i know they have role in melee aswell and basicly if you have 15 in dager its kind of 15% chance to hit, as well 100 long blade are almost 100% and ofcorse all what says kind souls on top of me ...
