But here is a starter for 10:

"All you have to do is in Steam add non Steam Library game to your Steam library and choose OpenMW.exe and now you can play it with PS5 controller. I actually added OpenMW Launcher.exe because in case I need to change something and after you press play in the launcher the game still works with the PS5 controller."
Should also work with Xbox.

I know it's hard to find one, but this game works amazing with a steam controller

Why would you want to play MW with keyboard and mouse? I'm basically trolling but I've always used a controller to play Morrowind, both Vanilla and the Overhaul.... haven't tried OpenMW yet though. But absolutely loved playing Morrowind, Two Worlds Epic Edition, Gothic 1 and 2, Oblivion and every other WASD movement based games. I can't stand trying to use keyboard/mouse to play a game (other than mouse based games like Divine Divinity, Diablo, turn based games, etc.) and I guess you can't stand the thought of playing with a controller. Different folks, different strokes I guess.

^lets just say that the user interface for this game seems to be designed for point and click usage.
movement and whatnot can indeed be nicer with a gamepad, but the interface feels clumsy to navigate without a pointing device

if you got used to it being that way, then by all means continue

Yeah, at least in the menus. Which is why when I play with a controller, and when I open any window (inventory, dialogue, etc.) I simply use my right hand and use the mouse for that. Otherwise I do everything with the controller. I can't set up quick keys obviously, but I do have next/prev set up on the game pad portion where up/down is for magic and side to side is weapons. The right stick controls the mouse cursor/camera, the left stick movement. The four buttons to the right are jump, use/activate (spacebar), ready weapon, and ready magic. The triggers are left mouse button and right mouse button etc.

I can do everything in game with the controller including navigating menus but as you said, that part is definitely better using the actual mouse. Well everything except as I said having quick keys set up to just press a number to ready a specific magic or weapon etc.

My nephew learned to play games with a controller but when playing Morrowind (yeah even young folks play) he prefers keyboard mouse too. Like I said, strokes/folks. lol. I respect anyone that wants to play their game their way.... including cheats, etc... something I never do. I don't even read strategy guides lol. I guess I'm just old.

Cheers.

I use a gamepad emulator that makes the game still think you are using a mouse and keyboard when those functions are set to respond to a controller. This is also a good way to play with custom controls even if you just reinstalled the game after a long time and the in game controls are at default. As long as your gamepad emulator has the configuration saved. You may be able to find a free one or a cheap one. It would be worth it if you like using the gamepad in various other games, and with any game version (steam/gog/disk/iso/dl). Just be sure to not get a virus while looking for one.
