The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Morrowind, Oblivion or Skyrim?
Okay I've been meaning to play this series for awhile and I probably won't play it until long after this discussion ends (if it begins in the first place). So which one should I play first? Would it be easier to get into Skyrim or should I start rough with Morrowind. I did try Morrowind before but I played it for 3 hours and later uninstalled it. I liked it but I was too busy at the time. I borrowed Oblivion a couple of times from a friend and I did play it a little but again I was busy playing other games at the time. Any suggestions to which to properly start?

I'll post the same question on all three game forums.

Depends on what you want out a game.

I dunno, a good game to invest in. Playing two of them right now (Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Dragon Age Origns) so something that'll keep me invested.

All 3 games require you to invest a considerable amount of time so I say go by the numbers, play them in the order they were released.

If you're planning on playing all three, I'd say start with Morrowind. It has more depth, more difficulty, and some more gameplay features that some would call "antiquated". Morrowind requires you to invest much more time raising your skills in order to be successful with them. It's much more slow-paced than later games. If you play Skyrim first, you might end up being frustrated when you move on to Morrowind because it may seem slow and tedious by comparison.

I love all three, and they can be fun no matter what order you play them in as long as you're willing to devote a large amount of time to each game. I've found that the more you put into each game, the more you get out of them.

Yes, I agree with Roxomoxoa, I puchased Morrowind very recently and have played Skyrim since 2011 and Oblivion since 2013, overall, Skyrim is the easiest (even on Legendary) Oblivion is slightly harder but Morrowind is extremely hard compared to Skyrim.
In Morrowind, there are over a hundred different factors that go into a single swing of the sword and it could even miss completely!
Morrowind isnt HARD necasserily, but if you are used to Skyrim / Oblivion, then you will find it challenging, so its up to which you would prefer, best choice would probably be to play Morrowind first before moving to the others, it will pull you into the series a lot more!

Only play Oblivion if you really, really want to. It lacks the magical and immersive qualities of Morrowind and Skyrim.

Between Skyrim and Oblivion I would go with Skyrim, especially if you are looking for a simpler game aimed at mainstream gamers. I played Oblivion for a few months on the Xbox when it came out and I never got too into it. I just bought Morrowind after trying to make a new Kung-Fu master character in Skyrim then realizing there is no "unarmed" skill.

We'll see how it goes...

I am happy to hear from other commenters that Skyrim is a good game, that's very encouraging. I pre-ordered Oblivion because Morrowind is such an amazing game, and that's where I stopped with the series. I expected Oblivion to be an extension, expansion, and improvement on Morrowind, but it is none of those things. It borrows a great deal from Morrowind, but is hardly a continuation, and the game play is ridiculously dumb. If Morrowind moves and engages you, I doubt you will much enjoy the odiously cramped and crippled playpen of Oblivion.
Morrowind is an open-ended adventure in the truest sense, and thirteen years after its release, I am still excited about cranking up a new character and exploring the world. Start there.

short answer-- if you don't mind using your brain (really using it) and reading a bit from UESP, then Morrowind first. If you just want to have fun do skyrim first.

Lore wise, it really does not matter. there is tons of lore (in books especially) and you can read lore online at UESP.

My experience-- I played morrowind when it first came out but thought "this is not so great and combat is hard." then a friend later said "use alchemy!" and I started playing smarter. Morrowind Modded up is incredible if you realize you need to learn and think about how to play the game and make a character. So if you are a curious person who likes learning, do morrowind first.

if you just like to kill stuff, explore, and have cool quests, try skyrim. Skyrim (especially modded) is really fun and unlike morrowind, it is an easy to understand game.

Don't try oblivion first. it is the weakest of the three. I love morrowind/skyrim but I just liked oblivion.

I agree with instiktive. The fact that all creatures level up with you (instead of having really hard areas) the boring dungeons, etc...the one reason I played was I liked the story and some of the quests were really cool. I had at least one "oh ♥♥♥♥" moment when playing quest lines. the thieves guild stuff was boss.

You could also buy oblivion and play NEHRIM. google it

Things I liked about morrowind's "sociology" -- people can hate you. one group liking you makes another hate you. Also, you can't join all 3 houses. pick a team! further, the quests for various groups INTERACT and not all guilds are as they seem. there are moral choices in skyrim guilds other than choosing to not do a quest. if you barrel through a guild's quest in morrowind, you may find out you made some serious ethically terrible things. which is fine if you want to. But you have REAL CHOICE. in skyrim everyone loves the dragonborn, but in morrowind, you will make enemies in your main quest.

I've played a few hours (so far) of Morrowind and it is vastly different compared to Skyrim. The map system is basic and you don't start knowing where everything is so you need to ask npc's for directions. The ability to talk to npcs about pretty much anything is also really nice compared to the standard choice of 3 dialouge boxes. The combat isn't as bad as iv'e been lead to believe- yes, missing is a thing at happens pretty often at low levels but in a way it makes sense if enemies dodge your blows or it glances off of thier armor. I really like the quests I've gotten so far in Morrowind- the world seems so much more alive than Skyrim to me. So many ramdom people seem to be wandering the trails, some want help fighting, some want an escort to a certain city, some are bandits, and this one wizard dude who just fell from the sky from a failed crazy potion!

Morrowind maps can be a pain. The answer is the google map of morrowind available on uesp.

it can pinpot where you need to go if it is a named location. and if you are able to read the features of you in game map you can compare them to the morrowind map online. That is how I have found a cave or a person that was annoyiing to find.

oblivion is the best game ever hands down
