He described 1 particular mission given by the Mages guild. There are several workarounds I can think of just by thinking about how the quests work.
1) You may in fact, never see that quest offered.
2) Telvanni is also particularly easy to get back into even if you do get expelled, simply by asking.
3) Finish House Telvanni quests first. Then do Mage guild quests.
4) Don't do the quest.
edit: Assuming you just don't do the quest- that doesn't mean you can't continue in the other Mages questlines to come to a point of completion. Just do the other quests offered and everything works out.
If you want to RP the game, there is no real limit. All the houses have a use for any adventerous sort. However, what is far more interesting is to try and 'talk' a moral character into joining one of the Houses. They all are bastards in and of their own right, and you tend to see the bastardry first before you get introduced to their awesomeness.
EDIT: House Redoran, from my personal experience, is also the hardest house to move up in. I had very little trouble with Telvanni or Hlaalu, but Redoran was very problematic. This might be because Redoran's skill set were all skills I didn't utilize very often.
Well, I am RPing a bit. First, I thought (just from basic things I looked up) that the House Telvanni and the Mage's Guild were like exact opposites. Isnt there some kind of thing in Morrowind where people will view you a certain way depending on your alliances? Like arent Mages from the Guild supposed to be somewhat hostile (not actually attacking) to you if youre in Telvanni or something like that?
Also, I know that I can be in the fighers ad mages guilds, but if im doing warrior type quests for Redoran, id rather have the mages guild so Ill have magic related quests to do, and vice versa with telvanni and the fighers guild, rather than having the magic to warrior quest ratio be too skewed.
The 3 Great Houses are at war with each other. Assassinations, economic land-grabs, persuasion of members to switch sides, blackmail, extortion, theft, and other wise. They probably don't care that you were doing some Imperial guild business to get some money, cheap services, and such thrown your way.
