Yes, first select the ring power from the spell menu (right mouse buttom), the close the menu, press R and your hands will be visible (casting mode), then left click with the mause. It's not necessary to equip the ring, when you select the spell the game equips the ring for you.
Remeber that there are 9 hotkeys where you can assign the spells/items/potions whatever you use most frequently. Press F1 and a window to configure hotkeys will pop up.
Beware: Items use charges, which slowly regenerates, (it regenerates faster if you sleep for long periods of time) but it isn't an actual spell, so it won't actually use mana.
Hint: [ and ] shift through your weapons quickly as well, by default.
I hope that you get into this awesome and wonderful, mysterious world of Morrowind, and The Elder Scrolls world in general.
But you can give it back to him and later steal it back in a Quest.
