Only certain pieces of armour count as 'uniforms,' even if they say Imperial in the title. I believe there's a mod so that all you need to equip is a badge rather than a piece of armour, but otherwise I'd try looking up the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages and seeing if the armour you're using qualifies.

You must have joined the legion for them to be asking about your uniform. You must have talked to Darius downstairs in the Madach Tradehouse in Gnisis to join the legion. He gives you your first uniform.

Your uniform is the Imperial Legion curiass. You will either have it in your inventry, and not be wearing it. Maybe you sold it. If you did you can buy another one somewhere. I think the armoury trader in Gnisis has Imperial studded curiass, which is a good one because it's light. Legion forts have shops, so look in them.

Once you are wearing an Imperial Legion curiass, you're OK.

Note different versions of the curiass have different armour ratings, and weight etc. Keep the lightest version spare in your inventory if you don't intend on on using the curiass as your armour.

Yep, you need the specific cuirass for your Rank for them to talk to you. Starting with the Legion Chainmail I believe. Whenever they hand you a new cuirass, wear it. The rest of your Armor isn't important.

No you can have any Imperial Legion curiass. If your not going heavy armour like me, playing glass armour light, keep the lightest in your inventory. That way it's not a burden to carry and you can put it on when you need to talk to them.

The Imperial studded curiass I mentioned is light.

You can add it through console commands, if need be.

Wierd. I have the Imperial studded one. It's fine. Until a couple of days ago I was carrying around a chainmail one. I traded for the lighter studded one. In fact it was chatting to you that prompted me to go see the armour trader in Gnisis, to see what he had. I decided to do the Darius quest I had active and just finished all the quests he gives me. (I think the initial curiass I had was leather, but it was months ago, and I am not sure.)

It must be an Imperial one though, and you must be wearing it when you chat to the Imperial Legion. (Just having it in you inventory won't work.)

I am starting to wonder if Ipaladinl was right, and you are a considerably different rank to me. As far as I think, you can wear any.
