I run Windows 8.1 on an Intel & Nvidia Machine.
EDIT: I have just fixed it buy *freshly reinstalling* it as said by logorogue.
I believe it was because I immediately tried to install the MGE mod after i saw the installer worked, without trying to play the game further than the launcher. So do try a CLEAN install completely deleting the folder in: <path to *steamapps*>/common/Morrowind
Delete the folder itself and try reinstalling. Hope it works.
I did indeed install a mod - the main one I'd like to have (and the only one I had tried to install) is the overhaul 3.0 sound and graphics mod. I guess that was the culprit. I followed the instructions rather closely - any idea if there is a different way I can set it up such that it will work properly? The only thing I didn't do was disable UAC, since I've read that is not generally advised, and folks claim that if you simply control-alt-delete when it won't accept mouse input (which I did have to do), you can work around having to turn that off. Any words of wisdom?

Morrowind and all my steam games are installed in programfilesx86. From what I read, that should be ok as long as you're willing to turn UAC off, which I did. I'd be open to moving morrowind if needs be but would prefer to leave my other games where they are if that's possible.
Also, I just noticed today as I was fooling around with morrowind that it will run in windowed mode but not in fullscreen, in case that tells you anything. That might do as a workaround (assuming the graphics and sound overhaul works in windowed mode), but I would like to get it working in fullscreen if possible.
Thanks again!
you may have to run stuff as admin if its still in program files so its easier to just have morrowind or any game with the issue installed to a different folder that isn't protected so heavily by Microsoft
Add what you have done and when u have done.
To reiterate, running as admin produces the same crash. And so far as I can tell, Steam won't let me create a new install folder on the same SSD where all my other games are (it will only let me create an install folder on a different drive, which I don't want to do), which means (unless I'm mistaken, and if so, please let me know and point out how to do this) that I can't move Morrowind to a different folder on my SSD without moving all my other (several dozen) Steam games to it also, which would also require deleting all my games and starting over from scratch with a new folder.
If there is some way to move just the one game (Morrowind) to a different folder and keep it on the same drive (my SSD), while leaving all my other games where they are, I'd love to know how.
