Medium armor is mostly bad without the two addons, but is a very good choice with them, doing exactly what you would expect from a medium armor compared to light and heavy.
In short: light armor weighs a metric f-ton less, making you move MUCH faster. But it will never give you anywhere near the level of protection from damage heavy armor grants you.
Boots : Heavy / Light same. (Daedric vs Light armour Artifacts, similar rarity tbh)
Greaves : Heavy (Daedric)
Cuirasses : Heavy / Medium. (Artifacs)
Pauldrons : Heavy (Daedric)
Gauntlets/Bracers : Heavy (Daedric)
Helmets : Heavy (Artifacs)
Shields : Heavy (Artifacs)
Summary : Yes, Heavy Armour DOES protect the most. Whereas other armour types only match it in two cathegories. The difference is vast too, with Heavy Armour having 80 (up to 100 with artifacts) base rating. Wheras Light has barely 50 and medium 45.
So, good luck using a new character that has NO STRENGTH to even wear heavy armor!
Strong light armor (Glass) is strong enough for combat, plus you get the added benefits of speed, and the ability to carry MUCH MORE weight. Try carrying 30 + items of Raw Ebony Ore (and other items) with heavy armor!
Tip: Equip your character with repair tools (Armorer's Hammers) and repair your own armor when it becomes damaged. The better your character's Armorer skill and the better quality Hammer or Tongs used, the better chance of successfully repairing an item.

For a Warrior, I would never use INFERIOR light armor, e.g., Nordic Fur, Netch Leather, and Chitin Armor.
The issue is that most armours are in fact worse then being naked. I was messing with the editer and found that most NPCs will go naked if you max thier level. The reason is that at level 100 unarmoured provides a better boost than most armours. The only good armours are the rarer ones (glass and ebony for example), and most of the ones from the add-ons.
Well it's more an issue that most of the common armour is worse than being naked. It doesn't matter if it's light or heavy, it's all useless below a cretain level (no clue what that level is since it has been so long since I last checked). For example most guards will go naked if you make them level 100 due to the awful stats of their armour.
Without the addons the only really good non-heavy armour was glass or a few rare one of a kind items. With the addons they added some okay armour for all types. Most of the "best" armour still comes from the base game, but at least there is usable medium armour.
