The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Full Screen but with Windowed Border???
STOP. DON'T GIVE A REFLEX RESPONSE, READ WHAT I SAY BEFORE RESPONDING. (90% of responses I get to questions are unrelated answers to things I already know)

This is not my image, but I'm having the same issue in that whether or not I'm fullscreen I get an annoying window border around Morrowind.

I had been using MGSO (Morrowind Sound & Graphics Overhaul) which includes MGE (Morrowind Graphics Extender) which is most likely the source of the problem- but the problem persisted even after I uninstalled, deleted the files in the Morrowind folder without applying mods and reinstalled!

Google is absolutely worthless for finding a solution to a problem with this many frequently-use words.

Activating Window or Fullscreen in launcher options does nothing. Changing to-or-from Windowed Mode in MGE options isn't fixing it either.

I have no idea what to do to fix this. Please advise.

Like I said, changing the resolution in-game fixed it.

I fixed it !! I had the same problem, annoying window banner at the top of the screen. After hours of surfing and trying out stuff I came across this which fixed the problem:

1. Start task manager (so you already have it running)

2. Start the game (.exe in directory)

3. The game will come up, and be stuck in weird windowed mode. Once you see the main menu (wait until after the logo video), alt-tab to task manager

4. Right click on the Morrowind process, expand, and press "maximize"

And that's it ! I'm running the game without any compatibility preferences, except it's launched as admin.
Also, if you want a higher resolution than the 1024x768, you can change the values by going into the REGEDIT (here's the link on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5LE3JDp8jk ).

here is the fix you should look through wiki this works better as well no border but be forwarned you still have to run it at aweful settings for fullscreen 64x480 to a max of 800x600 anything larger will give a render error message this is before even installing the fullscreen mod

I have the same problem, didn't have it on Windows 8.1 but now I have it on Windows 10.

I found a simple, temporary (in the sense that it will reappear when you re-launch the game) fix, Change the resolution in-game. It refreshes the screen, removing the border. after that, you can switch it back and it will still be gone.

Although I would like a permanent fix so I don't have to keep doing that every time I play.
I use the exact same method on a Windows 10, sure while it can get tiring especially every time you Alt+Tab out to have to readjust the resolution, it works and removes the borders.

The third reply of this lengthy convo from user scdunn.family already gave the only proper and working fix. If you have problems running the batch file. Make sure you do not run it as admin, or that you run it from c:\windows\system32
Can confirm: third guys fix worked perfectly.

Hi all,

I made a little program that easily removes Morrowind window borders and puts it fullscreen.
It is working on the Game Of Year Edition of Morrowind on Windows 10.

Program link : https://github.com/RICCIARDI-Adrien/Play_It_Fullscreen/raw/master/Release/Play_It_Fullscreen.exe
Program usage link : https://github.com/RICCIARDI-Adrien/Play_It_Fullscreen

Hope it will help !

It's a "bug" in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. For some genius reason, Microsoft thought it'd be a great idea to apply window borders on old fullscreen applications. You can fix it permanently by going to a program that is doing it and finding where it is located, so go to your morrowind directory which should be in a subfolder the directory where Steam called steamapps and in a folder in that called common. On most systems it'll be here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Morrowind

In there, right click the Morrowind.exe file and go to properties. Once on the properties, go to the compatiblity tab and look for the option that says "Force Simple Windows" If it's there, enable it. If not, and even if it is there, check the option that says "run this program in compatiblity mode" and choose "Windows XP Service Pack 3" (or the next highest service pack of XP you see), from the list. Then at the bottom where it says "Privilege Level" check the box that says "run this program as an administrator" and then click okay to close the properties and save the settings.

This should make sure the game runs properly without the crazy borders and so it can save your in-game settings (which it can't do normally if it's in either program files folders).
Not only did this not work, my save file is now gone. I should have just dealt with it.

This really worked, both things full max resolution and no ugly border. Thanks!!

So you compiled it using Visual Studio 2010. What .Net Framework were you using? More to the point, I'd like to know if this'll work on Windows 8.1.
