Problem with the FPS optimizer
I began playing Morrowind GOTY on Steam a couple of days ago and downloaded the unofficial patch plus the FPS optimizer in order to increase my resolution and FOV. I played for a good few hours and booted the game two or three times without any problems.

Tonight, however, when I tried to continue playing the FPS optimizer refused to launch, giving me this error message instead:

[FILE: D:/Morrowind.My/mw_fps_opt/source/mw.cpp; LINE: 19]
The system cannot find the file specified.

[ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND] can't open
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind
registry key

I´ve been googling for solutions for nigh on an hour by now without finding one. I even reinstalled the whole game along with both mods but nothing seems to help, and the weirdest thing is I can´t think of any apparent reason why the optimizer would just suddenly stop working. I was wondering if anyone´s had similar issues with the tool in question and if there is a known solution for the error.

Thank you for your time!

I'm sorry to say but I'm having the exact same problem, I don't suppose anyone has a solution? I'm using Windows 8.1 if that matters at all.

Hm, after a quick search, the only things I found about it are:
1-It means FPS Optimizer can't find your Morrowind installation.
2-Running Morrowind at least once before installing and using FPS Optimizer is supposed to prevent that.

But that still doesn't explain why it stopped working. Sorry.

I recommend posting a thread on the official forums, there's more chance of a veteran reading and answering your post there.

Funny how you guys dug this question up after almost a year of it going unanswered :) Help is appreciated regardless, of course!

In case somebody might still be interested, I don't think I ever solved the problem in question and opted instead to ditch the aforementioned mods in favor of the mod package named Morrowind Overhaul, which I think included the fixes I was originally after also. I happily played Morrowind for a good while with that installed, can definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a source-material friendly yet rather astounding overall facelift for the game.
After 3 hours of searching and testing I got the fix, search "regedit" in your Start Menu and open it up, then locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\bethesda softworks. If you don't have a folder called "Morrowind", than click Edit, New, and then Key, and call the folder "Morrowind". Now go to: https://www.regfiles.net/registry/the-elder-scrolls-morrowind-registry . If your computer has more than 2 gigabytes of RAM, download 64-bit (almost every computer is 64-bit, if you're not sure, download 64-bit). If you're computer has less than 2 gigabytes of RAM, than download 32-bit. This file is PERFECTLY SAFE and I have scanned and tested and used it. If you're on Google Chrome and it says it could be dangerous, click "Show All Downloads" and then click "Keep" on the file. Once you have downloaded this file, go back to regedit, click on the folder "Morrowind" and click File, Import, select the file and import it. Now launch Morrowind FPS Optimizer, and it should work perfectly. The reason why this bug happens is because your Morrowind Registry is missing, I have no idea why it deletes itself, but at least there is a fix, I'm pretty sure I'm the only person that discovered this, so share this fix on other forums with people having this issue, thanks!

I am getting a similar problem as this one. It's not exactly the same for me though. When I try to launch the game with the optimizer UI option on the bottom of the app, it gives an error message, but a different one than what the user shows here. It's saying that the game can't find the Morrowind.exe file and gives a different registry entry. I have found a working solution for now however. While searching through Google for any posts matching my issue, I found this site: http://lowgenius.net/morrowind/morrowind-fps-optimizer/
I downloaded the 2nd linked version with the included binaries and when I ran it, I got the error, but I clicked the bottom drop-down menu on the file browser window that comes up after the error message, then I clicked LOAD - FILE WAS FOUND or something similar to that and it went ahead and loaded the game and the optimizer functions normally. It's a little quirky, but it is working with this method at least. I'd rather have a quirky start, than have to run the game without the very useful tweaks that FPS Optimizer provides for Morrowind.
