Vanilla Morrowind Issues
Howdy, pardners!

I'm trying to run Morrowind on my new laptop but I am having some issues.
I can't enable anti-aliasing and there is screen tearing (using nVidia control panel to apply v-sync and AA didn't help at all), thus making it "unplayable" to me. The funny thing is that on my old Vaio - now deceased - it used to run smoothly and sharp.

My specs are: i7 4810MQ; GeForce GTX 860m; 8 GB of RAM; Windows 8.1 Professional. Perhaps too much power for a 2002 game, eh?!

I don't want any graphical mods or anything like that, just vanilla Morrowind. So don't bother suggesting this or that graphical revamp.

P.S. I also tried MGE XE, and it works... the only problem is that it disables the water pixel shading and that's not an option :D

Is there anything I can do to solve this annoyance?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Yours truly.

I have Morrowind installed under program files/steam... I just enabled Vsync and 4x AA (override program setting) in Nvidia control panel. It works just fine.
I tested this on a computer with a crappy geforce 210 (yes it's bad) .
I also tried the crappy FXAA blur-filter in nvidia control panel, it also works.

Did you select to override program settings when selecting AA?

Yes, Lip! I selected that option and the others, just to be sure. None of the settings seem to work when I run the game. There must be a workaround to this issue, I'll keep on looking.

Well, as I can not replicate the problem, I've tested on two computers, I do not know. Also I do not use Win 8 (I refuse) so...

Why not do what giantdad both asserted and suggested, install it in another folder? I would.
(... and if it solves the problem, good! Although, I still do not understand why AA should be affected by admin rights. Apart from "it's magic". Perhaps it's some Win8 problem?)

Edit: I forgot. I do not use a laptop. Laptops can be quirky when it comes to gaming. Just saying. :)

Have you tried using a fps limiter to get rid of the tearing?

Is an fps limiter different from setting the "Max FPS=xx" in "morrowind.ini"?

Yeah, I know that laptops aren't the pinnacle of gaming technology but I figured it would be more than capable of running Morrowind without any problems. It can be something to do with the OS as well... I appreciate the attempts to help me, comrades. It is always nice to see people willing to cooperate with each other! If I come across the solution, I'll post it here.

Just to be sure, does forcing settings through nvidia control panel work on other games?

Well, the only game I tried that was Oblivion because it does not allow you to use AA and HDR at the same time. As far as I remember it was working just fine, however, I tested it again today and it's not working anymore. A few weeks ago I updated the drivers to version 337.88 beta and right now I'm updating to version 340.43 beta but I'm not sure if that's relevant.

So it's not an issue with Morrowind then. Perhaps using something like Nvidia Inspector would work in your case, but it's seems to be a driver bug, so your best bet is either reverting back to an older driver or waiting it out. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about the location of your Morrowind folder unless you have problems with saving or are looking to mod it. Have fun!

They should both do the same thing and limit the FPS. Only difference being is that with an FPS limiter is that you can also use it to display other information on the screen such as CPU and GPU temps etc.

Hello again, Vvardenfell buddies. I managed to fix this problem a long time ago but forgot to post in here. Since I reinstalled Morrowind recently and went through the process of making the vanilla game run perfectly (for my liking) again, I decided to come back and fulfill my promise.

To make it short, the only thing that seems to get rid of the screen tearing and the jagged edges is the Morrowind Graphics Extender v.3.8.2-SVN_rev-178 (not MGE XE). These are the only settings I changed:
  • Refresh rate: 60Hz;
  • Antialiasinig level: 8x;
  • VWait setting: 1;
  • Anisotropic filtering level: 16x.

I apologize for resurrecting an old thread :steamfacepalm: but I thought it would be a good idea to share the solution that worked for me, in case anyone happens to be in the same situation I was back then.
