Stealing the diamond from Nalcarya
Possibly the stupidest question ever, but Imma debase myself - how do I get upstairs to pick the lock of her chest to steal a diamond? Is there a staircase or a ladder? I find myself in her one room shop with the one exit door and wallhangings.

There is a staircase inside the shop, and a staircase outside that leads to a second story door
There is one upstairs, one on her, and two on the shelf. Telekenisis + Turning Nalcarya around helps with the shelf portion. I like being a theif, but don't really care for the theives guild quests at the higher level.... stealing is fun. Stealing with crappy rewards from the guy in Vivec. Blegh.
You can buy one

That defeats the purpose of stealing them...
You can grab an invisibility potion from the thieves guild .. then pocket the diamond right on the shelf under her nose ;)

4 years late but I spent forever trying to figure this out, I eventually wandered upstairs and above the bed on the 2nd floor is a low level locked chest - It had 3 diamonds in it for me. (Of the store mentioned above.)

Glad you figured it out and stuck with it!

I'd like to think you have to read between the lines for this quest.

For such an early mission, it's interesting she sends you to this location. There's even a guard there. It's like she's testing you without specifically saying so.

She directs you to where diamonds can be aquired and who has them (one of the most important and well-known people in Balmora), but it's ultimately up to you how you do it. In my head-cannon stealing one is a way to not only show Habasi that you are a thief who's actually worth something, but I also see it as a little jab at the "Rich Hill" and the Camona Tong.

Unfortunately, the quest isn't as elaborate as you might think and it honestly doesn't matter one way or the other how you go about completing it. Even the quest text is like "hey any diamond will do".
