The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

What is a Dagoth?
There are a bunch of Dagoth xxx in this game. Dagoth Ur is the leader and he has about 6 lieutenants but there are also many low level Dagoth's. I tried searching but I cannot find any definition for this 'title'. It looks like it might mean a priest of the sixth house as opposed to just a layman.

House Dagoth is the Sixth Great House of Morrowind. At the start of the game the Sixth House is thought to be extinct, but this is later found to not be the case. All characters bearing Dagoth in their names are kin to one another and are related to Dagoth Ur. They seem to be priests because of the way they have chosen to prolong their lives by the use of unclean magicks.

I found the write up that explains that Dagoth Ur used to be named Lord Voryn Dagoth. I still find this naming odd. So, a bunch of people named John Smith, Ed Smith. Mary Smith etc. starting being called Smith Ur and Smith Ed etc. I can find no explination for that.

Edit: I found a referance to an Ur-Tower. The very first building in this world. That means that the word Ur must mean something, but I cannot find what.

Mostly its a reference to their affiliation with the sixth house.

AFAIK, Dagoth Ur is the leader and central figure of worship for a fanatic religious cult that's been causing a lot of trouble. Every NPC with "Dagoth" in their name is one of the priests in the cult and one of Dagoth Ur's kinsmen, as House Dagoth used to be one of the Six Great Houses of Morrowind.

So yeah, pay attention to BarbarianHeart's post.

Dagoth ist just the House. In Morrowind the house precedes the name. For example king Helseth of house Hlaalu is referred as Hlaalu Helseth. The same is true for Indoril Nerevar of house Indoril or Sotha Sil of house Sotha.

Dagoth is one bad dude with one bad 'tude.

But yes, as you go deeper into the main quest, plenty more is presented to you about the workings of the Sixth House. The sleepers were a creative touch, but I don't even know how it ends. On my first big playthrough, I got all my stats up to 100, including luck, and was level 60-ish, and even after all that, I didn't ever get to finishing the main quest. I just spent a hundred hours becoming guild masters and jumping over mountains.

It is their house name. All the great houses memebers have the same surname. Like House Harkonen in Dune or Lannister in Game of Thrones. Get it? Any universe questions can be solved by checking out http://uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page
