The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

MGE/MGE XE
Hi guys,

So... After everything managed to get the code patch running successfully as well as a few extras. Pretty pleased with myself lol.

Onto the topic...
I've installed the MGE and ran the set up wizard. This informs me I am missing the ddx_39x or something similar (not at laptop now so can't check) anyway... I installed said files and put them in the game directory (along with the exe) and still nothing. My DX drives are up to date. I run all as admin (in properties) ...

Any ideas?

If you mean D3D_39.dll, that is part of DirectX 9. Are you sure it's installed on your system? If you are running and OS later than Vista, you have to install it separately, even if you have DirectX 11.
Ah, I used run dxdiag and it tells me I have DirectX11. I did actually install what you mentioned above into steamapps/common/Morrowind from the web but it still doesn't recognise the .dll files. The game just doesn't boot.

Edit: Also after all installs, it also says that MGEgui has stopped working

My dxdiag says the same thing but I have DX9 installed. DX9 is not a single dll file. It's a complete API. So copying the dll file to the game directory won't work. I suggest you install DX9. Look at the redist folder in one of the newer games in your Steam folder. If you can't find it there, download the redist installer from Microsoft's site and install.

Edit: Are you sure file name is d3d_39.dll by the way?

Yeaaaah. I had a microsoft.dll as well and it didn't work. It gave an error saying unable to start application 0xc000007b after that.
Ah... I only actually have Morrowind on Steam.... No other steam games. Would Bethesda have the DX9 files?

Edit: Just downloading directx_Jun2010_resist.exe from Microsoft. Is that correct and if so, what file path does it need to take?

Wait, think I've got it installed correctly. Now I need to get it to actually do something. Any idea how to actually *improve* the graphics, and if I'd be better off with the MGE XE mod? Do I need to install distant lands? I wanna make Morrowind pretty:'(

If you want morrowind pretty MGE XE is your starting point. Distant lands works by pushing back the draw distance and crudely rendering trees/strructures/grass before the hardcoded pop in distance and it isnt alwys perfect. Just remeber to re run distant lands configuration after installing all your mods.

From there you want mesh improvments texture replaces better bodies etc etc. Happy mod hunting.

Ah, but my processor is integrated I believe. Will my FPS get raped? Do you suggest uninstalling the MGE and flat replacing with MGE XE?Would texture mods need to be installed in common/Morrowind or common/Morrowind/data files?

While I don't really know if your FPS will take a big hit (it almost certianly will be less in large towns), it would probably be a good idea to uninstall MGE before installing MGEXE. Texture mods go in common/Morrowind/Data Files/Textures, and MGEXE will put a file named MGEXEgui.exe in your Morrowind folder that you can use to adjust settings. If you're using distant land, make sure to use the Distant land generator wizard button to make sure it works. You can also change the FOV with it in case you're bothered by low FOV, among other things.
So is the MGGXE better than MGE? Is setup easy?
Okay, got it running...... the answer to that is a resounding ''yes''.
Now onto the texture mods....... so, I have downloaded a texture pack, and in the readme it says to install to Morrowind Data. I installed to Steam/steamapps/common/Morrowind/datafiles...
Also installed to common/Morrowind... doesn't seem to have worked.. any ideas?

If the texture files are loose (being bmp and dds files) make sure you merged the textures
folder from the mod with the textures folder in Data Files. If there weren't any loose texture files and they were in a bsa file, add to Morrowind.ini's [Archives] section "Archive 3=filename.bsa" in a new line. Obviously if 3 is already used use the next largest number. If you used an exe to install it look for where the pack's texture folder went and merge it with that of Morrowind.
I actually managed to work it out for myself but thanks. Do you guys think I should run this, or uninstall and run MGSO? I've backed up the entire Morrowind folder to Google Drive, don't know if the "backup" would actually work though?

It depends. If you allready have a setup of mods graphic enhancers that your pefectly fine with (or if your perfectly fine with vanilla graphics + MGE) Then dont. Its working now why risk breaking everything again when installing MGSO.

If there is somethign extra that MGSO offers that you want however and your willing to risk it go ahead. Just be aware and by now im sure you do know this but it bears repeating. MGSO can be an outright pain to get running properly. Ive installed it on at least 3 seperate occasions and it still fusses with me at least once.

I'm running Windows 10 with a Steam install of MW. I spent two days trying to get MGE XE to work, looking at everything I could find on the web about the problems I was experiencing. Here are the highlights:

- I tried MGE XE both with and without an explicit DX9 install. It made no difference. This should not be a surprise to anyone, as W10 includes every version of DirectX back to 9.

- It does not work from my user account (crashes immediately after clicking Play in the launcher dialog). Same behaviour when running the EXE directly as Administrator.

- Amazingly, it works when run from the Administrator *account* (both via Steam and directly). However, when it's running, the Fog of War on the local map does not update as you move across it. This is a deal-breaker for me.
> Aug 15 Update: It runs in my account provided that I launch Steam as Administrator (just launching MW.exe as admin is not enough). For some reason, the Fog of War updating is working now - no idea why.

- While running, the Distant Lands textures are beautiful. I'm sad that I won't be using them.

- The main reason I installed it was to be able to scale up the UI for use in my living room. Unfortunately, this feature seems to be absent even in version 0.9.10 where it is claimed to exist. Other people have report this problem. No-one seems to know what causes it to appear or not in this version.

The bottom line is that it is a bust for me. If anyone got past these problems with a W10 Steam install, I'd love to hear from you.

>> Update: I did eventually get it to work, except for UI scaling. See my comments later in this thread.

I agree - Win 10 appears to be a bust for me too. Shame because it has some good features but the loss of gamma correction in Morrowind is a deal breaker (see my post earlier today on the ssme general subject).
