Morrowind, because it's better and easier to get into.
Don't even think about touching Daggerfall withing using Daggerfall Unity[www.dfworkshop.net].

the ways Morrowind is designed for good, Daggerfall is undesigned for bad

I personally think that playing them in order 1, 2, 3 is the best way so a player can appreciate the advancements made in the sequels and stop at 3. Personally, my experience was not like that, my first game was 5, which I liked at first, but then I played 4 and then 3 and did more research and ended up not liking 5 and 4 anymore and liking 3 the most and I have never played 1 or 2, they are just too outdated for me, not graphics-wise as much as control/gameplay wise.

If you have no problem with playing 1 and 2, go for it.

Sequential order is the best, if you have patience for it. If not, then you can ignore 1 and 2.

Daggerfall feels very dated these days - it's from an era of gaming where developers were trying to recreate the freedom of tabletop roleplaying games like D&D, but without the technology to really support it; as a result, he world is massive but very little of it is handcrafted so it feels very generic at times; the same for most quests and NPCs.

Morrowind is much more like a single D&D adventure module - a tighter focus, but with everything designed and placed by hand. You still have a lot of freedom in how you develop your character and there are dozens of quest chains and factions to get involved in. Morrowind also benefits from a fairly unique setting - the Elder Scrolls lore was more established by the time it came along, and the isle of Vvardenfell is very distinctive, both in terms of the landscape and the cultures that live there.

This person is right. I have recently tried Daggerfall myself and after about 8 hours or so, I gave up on it. It was cool to travel back in time and see the obvious inspirations Morrowind took from the game, but Daggerfall is just too generic due to its fully randomized world.

That's my vote as well. It's a big "if," though--and there is a kind of a "hard break" between the first two TES games and the latter three in the way they're structured. (I suppose it's a bit similar to the GTA franchise.)

Daggerfall is a good game but the worst part of it is the gameplay loop.

Essentially the game is
>Get mission
> Go to dungeon
> Spend 4 hours exploring it killing random generated monsters of any kind that have no logical reason being in the same dungeon (you're hunting a fugitive but also the dungeon is filled with undead, bears, giant spiders, imps and everything that shouldn't be living together)
> If you aren't a magic build with recall, then spend 4 hours trying to find the exit.
>Return to town, get 150 gold reward for chumps

>Repeat

And this is only if your quest target didn't generate behind a wall/outside of any possible place to get in the dungeon.

Doesn't matter what guild you join, what mission you do, what city you go to, it is the same thing. Dark brotherhood assassinations are always some random guy in a labyrinth dungeon filled with monsters that should have killed the target.

Oh you need to get me a candle, in this 4 hours labyrinth dungeon filled with nonsensical monsters sitting at the bottom of a pit. Oh you already have a candle? Well It's not my special candle so ♥♥♥♥ you, go to the labyrinth.

Oh and don't jump while running up stairs or a ramp, you will fall through the ground and die.

Haha, yeah, very same, though I managed to play and finish Daggerfall and Arena, GTA1 and GTA2 were too much. Would still not recommend TES 1 and 2 to normal people. Though, the hand crafted main storyline dungeons very good in Daggerfal. Daggerfall reminds me Mass Effect 1, which also had tons computer generated poop planets.

Unless you are more patient with most, play them in order, it is very annoying to go from a modern control setup to an older one. The constant "What were they thinking?" kills the enjoyment.

you might wanna start out with morrowind first, should be less hard to learn and it'll get you prepared for daggerfall, and yeah as someone else said you should get daggerfall unity when you decide to try it out

♥♥♥♥, if you wanna you can add me and ask me about ♥♥♥♥, i've been playing both games for a while and can help you out
I think Daggerfall is getting a pretty bad rep in this thread that are very uninformed. Neither the game is entirely randomized nor is it a gameplay loop. And quite frankly Morrowind is also quite dated. So the excuse of "don´t play TES2 because it´s too old, play TES3"... that makes no sense, even TES4 is quite dated by modern standards.

Anyway, you should not try any of them in their vanilla state. Use Daggerfall Unity and OpenMW, look for videos about gameplay overhauls that make them more modern. Once you have done that you may want to play vanilla versions for curiosity, but if you´re not a hardcore fan of older RPGs by now, none of this titles are gonna do so on their own.

More than half the people that test Daggerfall never make it out of the first dungeon, and tons of people also don´t really do much in Morrowind before abandoning. Both games are extremely dated an requiere knowledge of their systems from the go in order to not reach what it may look like a dead end where you can´t progress.
