Alright.
I tried Windowed FullScreen and it seems to be having the same issue, but I can't pick a resolution in game anymore to fix it. It also runs much worse; with stutter and frames all over the place.
For an example:
If I open OpenMW Launcher and set the resolution to "Windowed Fullscreen, 1440p" it'll be rendering at that weird 4k ratio I mentioned earlier and run at like 2FPS.
If I open OpenMW Launcher and set the resolution to "Windowed Fullscreen, 720p" it'll seem fine enough (almost looks 1440p, but again, hard to say), but I only get like 30fps in Seyda Neen and the frames are all over the place when I look around.
In just fullscreen normal, if I set it to open at 720p to be 1440p, I don't have stutter/framedrops.
Windowed mode, set to 1440p. Loads properly. Runs fine. 60FPS, smooth.
It's just an ugly window in the middle of my screen, because obviously 1440p doesn't fill a 4k screen.
If I open the game in Windowed Mode and it's running fine, if I set it to "Fullscreen" while it's running in Windowed Mode, it will start doing the same crap it does if I start it in fullscreen, where the resolution is all out of whack.
By that do you mean switching to fullscreen when you've started on windowed or making the the window bigger until it fills the screen?
This isn't normally what I do, it was just a test. When I did that, going from Windowed to Fullscreen (like, in the settings in game), caused the issue to pop back up.
It's definitely a "fullscreen" issue.
I just spent like 10 minutes with the game in "Windowed Borderless" mode at 1440p, it took up about 2/3rd the screen in the center, ran fine at 60FPS, no stutters or nothing.
So the game itself, runs fine. There's just something wacky going on with my resolutions getting set wayyyy too high in fullscreen for no reason.
Also, like I've said, sometimes, no matter what, if I change any other settings in the game (like FOV or anything else), the screen will flash like it's changing resolutions again, then I get like 3FPS because it's set to that weird massive resolution (I'm assuming it's trying to run the game at whatever double 1440p is).
No idea why it's doing that either.
If I pick 720p though, it'll tell me the game is running in 1440p. It looks fine enough I guess so it should be alright.
I tried chatting with people in the discord, someone seems to have the same issue I do, so it's not uncommon I guess. No one there seemed to be able to help me figure it out though.
I'm just gonna close my eyes and pretend that the 720p that says it's 1440p is being truthful.
Now I hope to mod the game.
Thank you for you efforts to anyone who's tried helping over this process.
I spent like 3 hours on the OpenMW Discord talking with who I think are some of the developers. We were trying to figure out exactly WTF is going on.
Turns out. They got nooooo idea. Not in a bad way, we troubleshot like, 1,000 things. Turns out I have a rare bug. There was one random guy though that also has it, so they've added it to their investigation list of stuff to look into.
I was able to submit a some big ol' file to them that basically gave a code breakdown of what was happening. They're gonna look it over and see what they can do.
Hopefully my strife might help save some people in the future the same headache.
In the meantime, my work around is to change my resolution to what I want it to load as and then play Window Borderless. It's the only way without my PC melting from trying to over rend and downscale (maybe? who knows what it's doing) the image for no reason.
Shrug. Looks like it's a real head scratcher.
1. Check Graphics Driver Settings:
Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause resolution issues.
Check your graphics control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings) to see if there are any global settings that might be overriding OpenMW's settings.
2. Configure OpenMW Settings:
Open the openmw.cfg file located in the OpenMW folder (or the user data folder, typically found in Documents/My Games/OpenMW).
Look for the [window] section and manually set the desired resolution. For example: ini [window] width = 2560 height = 1440
Save the file and try launching OpenMW again.
3. Check Display Settings:
Make sure your Windows display settings are set to the correct resolution (1440p) and refresh rate.
If you're using multiple monitors, ensure that the correct monitor is set as the primary display in Windows settings.
4. Disable MSI Afterburner:
Temporarily disable MSI Afterburner to see if it's interfering with OpenMW. Sometimes overlays can cause unexpected behavior in games.
If disabling it resolves the issue, you may need to adjust its settings or find an alternative.
5. Run OpenMW as Administrator:
Right-click on the OpenMW executable and select "Run as administrator." This can sometimes resolve permission-related issues.
6. Check for Conflicting Software:
Ensure that other software that might modify display settings (like screen recorders or other overlays) is closed when launching OpenMW.
7. Reset OpenMW Configuration:
If you've made changes to the OpenMW configuration files, consider resetting them to default. You can do this by deleting the openmw.cfg file (it will be recreated with default settings when you launch OpenMW again).
8. Test Different Resolutions:
Try setting the resolution to a standard resolution (like 1920x1080) in the OpenMW launcher and see if the same issue occurs.
9. Check OpenMW Logs:
Look for any error messages in the OpenMW logs located in the OpenMW user data folder. These logs can provide insight into what might be going wrong.
10. Reinstall OpenMW:
If all else fails, try uninstalling and reinstalling OpenMW. Ensure you are using the latest stable or developer build.
11. Community Support:
If the issue persists, consider reaching out to the OpenMW community forums or Discord for additional support. Other users may have experienced similar issues and can offer solutions.
By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and hopefully resolve the resolution issue you're experiencing with OpenMW. Good luck!
