OpenMW Resolution issue still
This time I'm not using anything but OpenMW.

I went to the OpenMW website.

I downloaded the Developer Build because I need lua support. 0.49 has it.

I make a file on my external SSD called "OpenMW" then I extract everything to that folder.

I open Steam. I install Morrowind.

I open the OpenMW folder and run Installation Wizard.

I direct OpenMW to my Morrowind Data Files .esm

It tells me I'm all set.

I open OpenMW after setting everything up in the OpenMW launcher.

My resolution is jumping around and no matter what I do it will not stay on the one I select.

When I say jumping around this is exactly what's happening:

I open OpenMW Launcher. Set resolution to 1440p.

I launch OpenMW.

I start a game. Seems fine. Open Settings. The second I touch anything, the screen turns black (flashes black, like any screen does when it changes resolution), then suddenly the resolution in the in game settings that is blue (meaning the one that it's using) is "4096 x 2160 (265: 135)"

Notice how that ratio (265: 135) is insane.

So if I'm in the game though, and I'm like, "Alright, well let's change the resolution in game via the in game settings."

I pick another resolution and when I hit apply, it blacks out like a resolution change but it applies a much higher resolution, with no logic behind why.

Like, if I pick 600x480 it puts the game into 1280 x 960

If I pick 720p it puts the game in 1440p

When I say "It puts the game in" I mean that, after the black screen flash resolution change, the HIGHLIGHTED resolution in the IN GAME SETTINGS for where you pick your resolution is set to that.

Like If I pick 720p, it then goes "Black black flash resolution change. 1440P is blue and highlighted as the resolution."

If I pick 600x480, it then goes "black black flash resolution change. 1280 x 960 is blue and highlighted as the resoltuion.

BUT THEN!

If I go to be like pick 720p and it puts it into 1440p and I'm like "fine. Whatever." IF I TOUCH AAAAANNNNNYYYYY settings that toggle/slide whatever (FOV, Water detail, anything, any setting) then the game will do the "black black flash resolution change. AND THEN 4096 x 2160 (265: 135) is the blue highlighted set resolution"

Ugh. Wtf is going on?

I do know that previously, when I was fighting with this, once I got into the configure files, the "4096 x 2160 (265: 135)" was actually something like 5000 x 2000.

IDK why it's doing any of this. I haven't done anything. Like I said. I literally just installed Morrowind, and then did what you would do to install OpenMW. Lots of people seem to be using OpenMW 0.49 with no issues so I don't get what's going on here.

Now, I use MSI Afterburner, and it auto turns on in games. Normally it's in the top left, when I play OpenMW it's in the middle left. I can tell the resolution I'm in by the size of the overlay text for my GPU monitoring.

It's definitely NOT booting the game in the resolution I want it to and it's NOT being accurate when it tells me what resolution I'm actually in (the blue highlighted one).

Guys. What. Am. I. Doing. Wrong?

That 4096 x 2160 (265: 135) by the way, is not native to my screen. I have NO idea where it's coming from. My screen is just a standard 4k LG TV. The same kind you can buy at any Wal*mart or Best Buy.

Also, the "settings.cfg" file inside of my "My Documents > OpenMW" is set to the resolution to be 1080p when the game boots.

It's not. When I boot the game, it's definitely in some kind of higher resolution than 1080p (I can tell just visually) and there's NO blue highlighted resolution in the settings until I touch a settings option and then the game does the "resolution change flash/flicker" that happens when you change resolutions and then that 4096 x 2160 (265: 135) is highlighted blue.

Yeah. So. I open OpenMW launcher, it says that my resolution when I launch the game will be 1080p.

I launch the game.

It's 4k. The blue highlight (like, the whole "this is the selected option indicator") is on 4k.

Alright. I can confirm. In game, selecting 720p, when the resolution change is finished. It is in 1440p.

IDK why.

I mean, like, I'm 90% sure it's in 1440p.

Even though I select 720p, when the resolution change is done, the highlighted resolution is 1440p and all my GPU indicators pretty much align with that. The MSI overlay text is super blurry though, which in 1440p, it normally is not. (It's also, still in the middle of the left side of the screen instead of the top left).

I'd like it to work like... normal though, and actually be what I set it to so I'm not sitting here second guessing what's going on.

If I open the OpenMW Launcher and then set the beginning resolution to 720p, it will launch the game in 1440p and it doesn't seem to jump around either.

... why? Wtf mannnn.

Alright. So After Testing. The conclusion is that, whatever resolution I pick, it's doubling it.

Not sure where the "4096 x 2160 (265: 135)" is coming from tbh, but whatever.

The problem is, the UI is super blurry as a result.

Like, I can pick 720p, fine. It's actually 1440p (I guess, IDK though), fine.

The UI is blurry though, like it's in a low resolution. The game itself seems... fine enough. Like it looks HDish. It's hard to tell because I have no mods or anything so it's all the old textures and stuff.

Even the overlay for my MSI is blurry, like it's all running in a lower resolution (720p to be exact), but the game itself is telling me (blue highlighting) 1440p.

I'm tearing my hair out. I just wanna play Morrowind.

So this is mostly going to be guess work on my part.

As a side note - a quick search found this being an issue with several games using 4k tv's.
It might be caused by it automatically switching between integrated and dedicated gpu. Apparently being in fullscreen mode forces it to 4k, but borderless / windowed fullscreen does not.

Link to the discord, might be able to get better help there: https://discord.gg/AkBAvCNf

Anyways, whole bunch of questions.

If you launch Morrowind normally - not through OpenMW - does it do the same thing?

Can you disable the MSI overlay?

Is the TV the only connected monitor?

Is the Windows display scale set to 100% ?

Are you playing in fullscreen, windowed fullscreen or windowed?

Do the other settings change back or is it just the resolution doing it?

Is the settings.cfg in the Documents folder marked as Read-only?

If we can get the resolution staying at the right thing, we should be able to scale the UI separately.

No. Not when I launch Normal Morrowind (not OpenMW).

If I launch OpenMW without using the Open MW Launcher, yes (same issue).

I can but I haven't done that yet. Not sure what it would matter. I also have my Nvidia overlay on as well. Neither of these have ever given me an issue with games.

Yes.

Not normally, but I have changed it to be 100% and done testing and it has no effect. That is to say, if it's at 200% or 100%, I have the same issue with the resolution in the game. Changing scaling seems to have no impact.

Fullscreen. I can't stand playing games in windowed mode.

Strictly the resolution. Everything else is staying the same. Water reflections, FOV, Camera Sensitivity, Shadow settings, etc, they all stay.

No.

The thing is, like, if I pick 720p and it goes to 1440p right? The UI is like, super blurry like it's in a low resolution. Scaling it (tried) just makes it blurry and big. Yet when it's at the high high resolutions (when it's not behaving), the UI is very clean looking (like it's in the proper resolution)

I just tested turning off MSI and my Nvidia overlays.

No difference.

Also, when I select 720p and it blue highlights 1440p. I'm not entirely convinced it's really 1440p, it's hard to tell if it's really that or another resolution.

It looks slightly sharper than 720p but the AA seems like it could be a low resolution like 720p instead of 1440p. The UI is blurry like it's 720, that's for sure. But everything is small too.

Blurry like a low resolution, small like it's a big resolution. Odd. Very odd.

However, if I set it to 720p. Then close the game.

The "settings.cfg" in my "My Documents > OpenMW" that says (when read with notepad) that it's in 1440p.

...whatever that's worth.

Give the windowed fullscreen option a try.

Apparently another potential solution is going into the programs compatibility settings and changing the DPI settings.

The thought of playing a game in windowed mode makes me cringe super hard, I have a visceral aversion to it because... IDK, probably OCD or something.

I'll give it a shot though. I'll report back in a minute.
