Local Map Stops Updating

Every so often my local map will stop updating itself as I'm wandering around. Reloading will get it working again, as will entering a nearby location. I can also wait it out and it'll just randomly start filling in again. I don't think it's a mod issue, because I had this same thing happening back in '07 when I owned the GotY disks and the only mods I had then were those official plugins. Am I missing a skill check (and if so which skill), or is this a known bug, or is something else going on?

It's a known issue, but not sure it's one that was ever resolved. More of a system thing. Nothing to do with skills.

The map is basically loading another copy of the morrowind worldspace and displaying it, so sometimes it might freeze or bug out. Another cause is if you're too low or too high.

If you haven't done it already, you could install the Patch For Purists and the Morrowind Code Patch (with default settings, unless you want to use one of the additional features). Both fix all kinds of issues - I'm not sure if the one you reported above is among them though.
By all means, read the descriptions before installing them (never do anything just because someone tells you to do it).
