Setting up my OpenMW game
I've been discussing some set up options in this discussion, but since that discussion was started by someone else and unrelated to my questions, I figured I'd not hijack that discussion any longer.

We'll be discussing (hopefully) various mods available and compatible with OpenMW that will enhance the visuals and gameplay of the OpenMW towards a MGSO level.

What I'm not interested in is debate about which is the better way to run Morrowind. I've already had those conversations in other topics, and I'm keen to give OpenMW a try. I have a prefectly fine installation of MGSO and am very impressed with it, but since I'll be kicking off a new character very soon, I'll give OpenMW a look.

Anyway, feel free to suggest mods (with links please :happymeat:) that you think are worthy to be included.

Cool, I'll get them.

If I copy the Morrowind folder from the Steam installation folder to another location, can I point the OpenMW at the new location and retain the current set up as well as an OpenMW set up?

I have Morrowind GOTY in Steam and when I ran OpenMW somehow it just copied files or something and works fine when I launch OpenMW and when I want to play vanilla MWGOTY I just launch it in Steam so I can continue the character I made there.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for your input. I'd like to keep the two install separate if I can, just so I know that I can use a mod in one game without affecting the other. Just ran the OpenMW on my regular Morrowind folder and got the yellow exclamation mark before I even left the census office. Some other graphical glitches that I'm putting down to using the texture files from the Steam install, but not having the plug ins enabled in OpenMW. I only enabled the official esm files to see what it would look like with no extra esps active.

Must say right from the first battle, I miss the combat mod and the quick casting option (from MCP).

Strudo76 this was the first mod I ever used with ESIII and I just downloaded Westleys_Pluginless_Head_and_Hair_Replacer and am currently downloading Morrowind Rebirth 3.5

Strudo76 you have to download the Morrowind Rebirth 3.5 mod also combined with OpenMW it will blow your mind even if you have played Morrowind in the past as did I. Just WOW! Check it out!

Ah damn, I actually downloaded Rebirth when I first set this up a couple of weeks ago. Decided not to use it since getting it running with MGSO looked like a pain. Just checked it out and I only have 3.4 :wasted: Guess I'll have to do another download.

Anything else you'd recommend with Rebirth, or just use it as is? Are things like the unofficial patch project required when using OpenMW?

And, dont worry, youll come to relove the older combat and spell casting much more (: (but you could try and find a mod that does it on its own as I have found it once I think)
I'll give it a bit more time and see if it grows on me. But geez it's painful swinging and missing continuously.

I just got back into Morrowind after years and the PC Gamer articile about Rebirth 3.5 is what got me really wanting to play it again but I got the OpenMW mod first. I then got Rebirth on my Steam edition and then ran the OpenMW conversion again to get Rebirth in my OpenMW version. The widescreen is nice to have and without it my PC would leave the static image of the on my diesplay after I closed it and it was a bother to deal with sigining out and signing back in to get it to go away unless I played in the windowed mode on vanilla but then I couldn't see my stamina and such. Rebirth does breath even more life into an already great game that I had forgotten about for far too long.

Hi there. I just installed OpenMW hoping to check it out. I get an error on first run. It states: Bloodmoon.esm asks for parent Morrowind.esm. Check your load order. I own Morrowind GOTY on Steam here, so I can't figure out why this is happening. I did try to run MGE XE at one point, but it wouldn't run at all. I am on Windows 10. Any idea how I can fix this error on OpenMW?

Thanks, in advance.

bloodmoon has to be below tribunal, otherwise yeah, look for exlaimation points in the data folder and hover over them for the problem and how to fix it

I got the same error the first time I tried it and then I unchecked Bloodmoon and the other expansion and ran just Morrowind and then clicked the bockes for the expansions and it worked fine.

I found this on YouTube and it may help a little: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzp7gltHqBs

I'm really in two minds about this now.

I'd like to use OpenMW, simply for the ease of use and to take advantage of the more efficient system. I've had a few wasted and frustrating play session by forgetting to start MWSE before playing.

However there are a lot of things in the code patch that make sense and I like, without even considering the combat mod.

Should I use Morrowind Patch Project 1.6.6[www.uesp.net] with OpenMW, or would that not be required?

Also should I use mlox to sort the load order, or does OpenMW handle that?

not required at all, OpenMW should do pretty much everything that the patch project does.
Does it? I don't think a new engine fixes broken quests, dialogue loops, floating statics or even typos. That's the sort of things the patch takes care of.
