The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Performance
For reference, I have a laptop, so switching between the integrated GPU and dedicated GPU is an issue I'm well aware of.

Launching this game out the box defaults to the integrated GPU. This gets me about 70fps outside and honestly isn't bad. Despite switching GPU's in the Nvidia Control Panel, the game still does not use it, and my dedicated GPU is not an option in the Morrowind launcher.

OpenMW gets me a bunch of options. But, without any mods and on my dedicated GPU, i'm getting 35fps outside? Why is my dedicated GPU getting half the frames of the integrated one? I must be doing something wrong, hence why I came here for help.

If anyone has a solution to either improve performance of OpenMW, or get the vanilla version to use my dedicated GPU, I'm all ears.

Edit:

Intel i7-5700hq
8GB RAM
Intel 5600HD Graphics
Nvidia GTX Geforce 950M

If you want to play vanilla on GPU, try to use MGE XE first.

OpenMW without any mods on GTX 950M should be 350fps outside (not 35!!). At least, if shadows are disabled and draw distance is sane

I did just try MGE XE and that did help with vanilla. Not perfect, but better and did use my dedicated GPU, so thank you for that

OpenMW should be 350fps?? i must be doing something wrong then. I'm completely new to Morrowind and just bought it on sale so I know nothing about this game or how it works. I'll recheck my settings and see whats going on

Why not. Test:

Nvidia GT420M
60fps (vsync is on), in Balmora (most heavy place in the game).

Try to tweak shadows and draw distance a bit.

CPU is very important for OpenMW too, by the way. Not just a GPU.
If your laptop in power-saving mode then switch to a high performance profile

I will try those. I legitimately appreciate the help. I'll let you know how it works

I changed the priority of OpenMW in task manager from normal to above normal, i changed my profile while playing from balanced to high performance. I turned off shadows. Now, In OpenMW, with draw distance set to the maximum (6656) i was getting 100-140fps at 1080p.

Is there a way to get the graphical effects from MGE XE like distant lands or the other effects in OpenMW? Or do I need to find similar mods?

I do not use OpenMW anymore I prefer MGE XE ( I have come to realise most modders do, so a lot of new mods need it and/or MWSE-Lua).

Anyway, came across this on Reddit from 2 years ago. Hope it is what you want:
"I'm not sure if it has changed in the nightlies but with the current stable version (0.43), you have two sets of options in settings.cfg:

Terrain → distant terrain: this will not actually change the view distance but only load the whole world rather than only the surrounding cells;

Camera → viewing distance + Cells → exterior cell load distance: this combination of settings will set what is displayed and allow you to see beyond the default distance (which is 6666 / 1 cell)."
