The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Still playable without mods?
Morrowind is my favorite game from my childhood, and Oblivion isn't much lower. I don't own either on Steam and haven't played either in years. I remember loving Morrowind when my dad and I used to play together. I can look past graphics and even gameplay (too some extent) just because of pure nostalgia and the fact I can adventure through Morrowind again. That only problem with that is if it is enough! I've heard is has aged terribly and is almost unplayable. I don't believe to unplayable part, but thats why Im asking you guys. I would hate to use mod because it would take me out of it.

It will play just fine without mods. I think the original Morrowind is the best anyway.

ok so 2 things about this.

A there is some amazing mods that compliment the game perfectly. I personally love the texture packs. For example Readable sign mods that allows you to glance at a sign with out needing to get up close and read the tool tip.

Another thing. the game is "Borderline Unplayable" But not for the reason you may think... The game is not optimized for modern hardware and chugs like a mofo. If you are interested in playing through the game in all its glory, I would snag it on sale now and look into this engine revamp. https://openmw.org/en/

Some fans are remaking the Morrowind engine to run effectivly on modern hardware. It contains no morrowind deta files tho, so you still need the game... Its just an engine you run instead...

If your not planning on modding the graphics tho, it should not be an issue tho. The game is low power without graphics tweeks.

I've never heard of the game having bad performance on modern hardware myself. I've heard of it throwing hissy fits over windows vista and 8, but then, most older games have issues with those two.

The only modding the game would 'require' to be playable would be graphics related. So long as you know how the system works you should be just fine with vanilla gameplay.

If you do decide to play do yourself a favor and get the MGSO v. 3.0. It's a collection of purely graphical and sound mods that do not alter the original apearance of the game only update it to be almost as good as Oblivion graphically. The game hasn't aged as well as some others of the same era so the graphics may be a bit archaic at this point. The 'Feel' of the game still remains true to the original though. The MGSO also conains an EXE optimizer to fix the performance issues on modern 64bit systems and allows you to pick modern wide screen resolutions up to 1920x1080. It makes the old game seem young again.

If you are scared of messing up your pc with mods for a bethesda game, you shouldn't be on pc for gaming in the first place. If you actually manage to do so, you shouldn't ever come within 50 feet of a computer.

I'm playing Morrowind with no mods on Windows 10. It does crash every now and then, but not often. And not on anything consistently - after I restart the game and repeat the game since the last save (sometimes only seconds), then I can do whatever made it crash before.

The crash might be due to DEP. You can disable it using the following:

Click Start, right mouse click Computer, left click Properties, Advanced system settings, Advanced (tab), Preformance Settings, Data Execution Prevention, Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select, Add... Morrowind.exe... click OK when done.

I never used a mods in my life,I'm more a rpg gamer that don't really care about modding, just want a game that play fine, have a good resolution and not blurry texts, can enjoy a good story even if the graphics are bad.Stop the insults,we can't all be mods obsessed.I'm more of a story and lore buff so a game that play just fine is enough for me,heck I play stuff like the first Divinity,Baldur's Gate,KOTOR and Planescape with no problem so graphics are not an issue to me.I enjoy quality far more.Would love for you to stop assuming I'm stupid to not want to use mods,I never got interested in them,if you need to modify it heavily with mods, maybe the games are quite bad if you can't enjoy in their vanilla state.Still I enjoy Skyrim just fine with no mods and I never seen a problem with ESO.So why mods if...I can play games like Diablo perfectly with just a small compatibility trick, why do the compatibility trick would not work with Morrowind.I prefer to play a game that I can play just fine without any modification and give a great experience without the need of mods, don't think mods are essential anyway.

Absolutely still playable without mods!

The people who tell you that you need major graphics overhauls are those people so insecure they're scared that a Skyrim player might not like the game, and so go around telling everyone the MUST use an overhaul. Frankly, Skyrim players don't care. They just want a good game. We need to start telling people that this is a good game instead of obsessing over missing eye candy.

Is there a way to get a full screen and non blurry texts because that was my only issue,I tried Wizardry 8 so old schools rpg are not a issue to me and you're right even modern Elder Scrolls fans want a great game.

I'm personally not a graphics person, but if given the option, I will use mods to improve the graphics somewhat if they are really bad. The models for bodies in Morrowind just don't work for me, feeling really bad, so I use better bodies to make them less gross. Anything that actually alters the asthetic style is a no-no though. Increased resolution textures that maintain the original appearance? All for it. Higher poly models that keep the original design? Fine. Turning a tundra into the tropics (for an extant example)? GO AWAY.

I actually find Daggerfall to look better than vanilla morrowind, since sprites generally tend to age far better than true 3D does.

So it will be worth buying especially now that it's on sale because I do think I can deal with small convenience mods like resolution, texts fix or better models can be worth it but I don't mind graphics that much having grown up in the gamecube/ps2 era and my first exposure to gaming being a N64 and Red and Blue, also Dragon Warrior Monsters Tara Adventure on the Game Boy Color

Lol. I got introduced via an older siblings old SNES that they left behind when they moved out. Low res graphics don't bother me. Bad graphics do tho.

The game is quite playable... Modern hardware cant utilize it. AKA multicore, SLI graphics chaining and the ilk.

That said, the game was not intensive to begine with... it only REALLY chugs to unplayable if you get into graphics overhauling, unless you have a BEAST of a PC in the right ways.,
