The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

aged extremely well
im not a huge fan of playing older titles due to the control differences and or visuals but morrowind feels different.
to me morrowind is closer to modern "niche" indie games than old titles.
i dont even like to replay my childhood favorite games.
even oblivion feels yuckier to play than morrowind for me

the closest thing that comes to mind when i mention "niche" indie games is something like kenshi.

i hope i atleast got part of my feeling across as i hate and cant write for ♥♥♥♥.

this game aged like a fine port wine

Oblivion is a 360 legend for goofyness.
I don't dislike oblivion beat it recently and loved it, but it is way more clunky and inferior to morrowind so is daggerfall. Neither one can match morrowind but they both got lots of fans who claim they do. Skyrim, I'm trying not to pass judgment on a game I have no interest in playing.

Also liked daggerfall but the fans of that game act like its the best TES ever when its more like pixelated mortal kombat era goofyness and a clunky inventory system. As well as incredibly padded dungeons that are way to confusing for their own good.

Morrowind is the pinnacle of tes games. Not just a great tes game, but one of the best games ever made.

Yeah oblivion is still a decent game, but it's second worst mainline elder scrolls after arena imo. Yes, even Skyrim is better than oblivion because it takes many steps back in the right direction. Oblivion made attributes completely useless and gutted them from morrowind, and while Skyrim removed them altogether, they at least brought in a perk system that allows you to create vastly different characters (even though some of the perks are filler or do what attributes did, they're still more effective than the almost worthless attributes of oblivion).

The level scaling is vastly improved in Skyrim and makes it come off as less game-ey and more realistic (at level 1 every dungeon isn't just rats and imps for example, you still get tons of variation and some dungeons will be dangerous at low levels rather than the entire world leveling with you).
Hand placed loot is leveled now too (so no longer is every single weapon in the overworld iron and steel like in oblivion). Enchanting was brought back as a skill and imo is better thought out than oblivion. There's far more unaffiliated quests, so every character doesn't have to join factions to get quests. Combat system is the same as oblivion but more in depth (shield bashing, stamina is important again, less damage sponges).
Thieving is much better and more rewarding than oblivion (no longer is every very hard locked chest full of calipers and 5 gold because the players might *gasp* get too rich to early if they steal as the design philosophy of oblivion was).

Also every town isn't unlocked right at the beginning of the game so you can't fast travel across the map from the start. Like morrowind you actually don't know how many cities there are right off the bat, and also in game fast travel options are a thing (there's horse carriages to take, so you don't have to use the teleport anywhere fast travel if you don't want). So if you want to get to other cities from the get go, you actually have to walk or get to a city and use a horse and carriage.

Skyrim definitely does some things wrong (extremely short faction quest lines with bad writing where you're chosen one in every quest), and removing spell making. But honestly that's about it for what it does worse than oblivion. It's overall a much better game IMO.

Unfortunately fallout 4 is complete trash and so is starfield so it doesn't look like Bethesda wants to take any more steps back in the right direction.

to me morrowind is a free game - not good made - and not competitive
but - because of this - i learned a lot about
game development - bugs - modding - ...

how can a single player game be competitive? it is also not free...seems like you actually have not played the game.

it aged well because of the art direction maybe why new low poly games like dread delusion try to emulate the feel of morrowind. the world has a realistic look that holds up but npc have a low poly not trying to be real look to them which is does not have that uncanny valley oblivion had (there is so much wrong with that game i dont even want to go there ) and now skyrim is showing its age with the actual npc face models but morrowind still holds up because it never tried to be realistic with its faces and npcs. it holds up like a pixel game still does. this is why many games like runescape are still popular the art style keeps it from looking dated. not to mention the lore / story is just so well done it feels like a timeless masterpiece because it is.

this is why i have been playing many low poly games lately :

dread delusion / lucacid / super kiwi 64 / toree etc

He probably confused this with the free versions of arena and daggerfall probably thought this was the same. But nope, this is one of the greatest games ever made and one that bethesda knows people will buy forever.

Not that daggerfall is bad. Its actually a lot of fun and probably the best game of its kind at the time.

Psycho give arena a little slack the games ancient but it did have a very good dungeon/magic/leveling system. Simple yet fun and compared to what else they had it was still a great game. And skyrim, good to hear its a good game I wanted to beat morrowind one more time before I try it. Also loved arenas villain, comedy gold.

Oblivion is yucky to play, it's easily the worst of the modern elder scrolls and the second worst of the main ones.

i completely agree its a hideous game with terrible art direction and a boring setting that should have been more interesting and alien but todd coward watched lord of the rings and made a wish version. its the only game in the series i played once and will never revisit. i dont think its the second worst of the main games i think its the worst. even arena i had a better time with.

i started with daggerfall and love the game to death. to me morrowind and daggerfall are the best in the series. and i do love skyrim i havent played much on steam but i played alot on ps3 and on my switch i think its a great console action rpg lite and does what it sets out to do well and has a beautiful art design despite the ugly npc faces.

Ya'll being way to hard on oblivion but it does have its flaws, like the absolutely terrible inventory system that crapped on morrowinds outstanding one. Or the uh, every woman in the world sounding like a 70 year old chain smoker. Worked better on crazy dark elves but I still like that voice actress but she does not fit for every single woman especially none dark elves.

Love her snide and aggressive quotes in morrowind tho.

arena is a good time as well for what it is. i enjoyed the story and the dungeon delving. and i love pixel art it holds up forever as does daggerfall because of it.

im just sharing my honest opinion i love arena / daggerfall / morrowind /skyrim / eso / legends but i just cant get into tes 4. i find it to be so generic and bland, and just ugly as sin to look at. it has some great writing much better than skyrim in its side quests however i still think the main quest is a snoozer and skyrims was more interesting. overall skyrim wins for me between tes 4 and 5.
I don't know if I'd call it ugly lot of the npcs are... I mean I'm not one of these people that thinks everyone should be a super model cause its unrealistic but.... Even some of morrowinds females were prettier. Hell edwinna beats almost all the chicks in oblivion.

Ugly as in uncanny valley / creepy puppet / manikin looking not ugly as In human beauty as something so unnatural can not compare to realistic things. It’s horrific

I have no idea what you are talking about but keeping it simple stupid the Bethesda way I will explain

Oblivion hard core uncanny valley they tried to be “current gen” at the time and failed even than and now it just looks like a bad nightmare. Skyrim for it’s time looked realistic but as time went on it’s showing it’s age and now seeing through the cracks the npcs look pretty uncanny.

Morrowind never tried to look realistic so it’s faces are timeless the same way super Mario pixel classes are always timeless.

Art direction is the best in morrowind it was creatively and smartly done and didn’t try to reach higher than it needed to it and landed on the perfect spot. Based and dagoth pilled and forever the best tes game.
