Question about resting
Where can I find a good place to rest in a bed so I can level up?

I know that I can pay to rest in an inn, and theres a bed in Caius's house, and that I can level up if I sleep out in the wilderness (as long as the damn dark brotherhood doesnt attack me), but Im an RPer, and Id really like to have a place to call my own, even though I know you cant really "own" a house in this game, short of some kind of prize you get from the great house questlines, but Im far from that.

Ive heard that its kind of a long standing tradition in this game to kill some non-important NPC in your favorite town and claim their house to store your loot.

Ive also heard that putting thing in someone elses containers tags them as stolen, but that if the NPC dies his containers are up for grabs.

However, more on point, I killed a random NPC oin Caldera who had a tiny little house (dont remember his name, it was long and both started with As, hope he wasnt important later) but the game wont let me use his bed.

The weird thing is, I seem to remember earlier in the game I tried to sleep in someones house and it said something like "you cant sleep in someone elses bed" but its not doing that here. Im looking right at the bed, hell, im standing on top of it, and the message i get is "youll need to find a bed."

So is this bed just broken or am i doing something wrong?

Been a while but here two very early ones which can last as long as you want.

Seyda Neen

Totally safe sleep you can get at the excise building from the bed roll on the floor (no brotherhood)

Take over the shack of the guy involved in the tax quest.

I know about those two. I want to have houses in other areas as well. Like in Caldera where I killed this guy.

I already discovered on my own that after I killed that guy who killed the tax collector that I could sleep in his bed as if it were my own.

THATS why Im confused. I killed that guy -> I get to use his bed. I kill the guy in Caldera who lives alone -> I DONT get to use his bed.

I mean I know this is a fantasy world, but that's not how math should work, right?

Its ok ladies and gentlemen, I found the cause of the problem: I am apparently retarted.

I was trying to use the bed by looking at it and pressing the rest button, when of course I had to look at it and press the activate/use button (space).

It had been so long since I rested using a bed that I forgot how to do it. lol

If you want a house of your own, you'll need to join one of the 3 Great Houses, Hllalu, Redoran and Telvanni and advance far enough in their ranks for them to build you a stronghold. Some of them are a little... out of the way though.

I sleep in the mages guild or the temple most of the time since I joined both of those factions. Other than that I normally kill nerano (spelling?) and take his mansion in balmora, plenty of space to put stuff on the tables etc.

you can rest in any bed as long as no one sees you... although its illegal to sleep in someone elses bed

for legal bedding most guild houses offer free bedding (not all beds will work look for a place in the hall with a cluster of beds)

also going outside of the towns outskirts will be sufficent to level

There's a Balmorra Fighters Guild quest where you have to take down criminal in Balmorra who owns a large house. I always take that one for my own. Seems at least semi-legit from a RP perspective.
