Can't restore magicka by resting.
The manual, in-game tooltips, the discussions and the wiki all say I can rest to "naturally regain magicka," but nothing happens. No matter how many times I use the bed in the census house to rest, it just stays at 0. I don't have access to potions to restore my magicka and alchemy is unavailable to me. What am I supposed to do to restore my magicka?

Maybe I'm not resting right? Am I supposed to own a bed, as opposed to just sleeping in any old one? I've been using the bed in the census house at the beginning of the game, so I haven't tried anything else.

When you have the Atronach birthsign you can not regenerate magicka through resting.

Really? That's what "stunted magicka" means? Dang it, I wish that was more clear in what that did. That's such a pain to work with.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it.

^ Atronach = Stunted Magicka/Womburn
You'll have to get Alchemy going to survive this lol.
You could eat Void Salts for a small CHANCE to restore some magicka, also spell absorption + summon ancestral ghost works wonders (youl have 50% spell ab. with the atronach)

See Ajira in Balmora Mages guild, and train a few points in alchemy to get going.
Frost Salts, Void Salts, Comberry, and ripened/unripened belladonna berries (love these two) all restore magicka :)

If you want to restore magicka with the atronach sign, you can either drink the somewhat rare magicka potions, donate at a shrine, or get something like a summon to attack you with weak spells. If that's too tedious for you, restart or play a warrior class who uses the atronach sign to easily curbstomp mages by absorbing their spells while you get in their face.

I think I only used Atronach once, but I'm pretty sure you regenerate magicka if someone casts a spell on you and you absorb it. Could be wrong though. It can be a bit overpowered, but if you don't like it, you can just open the console with "0" and then type in enableclassmenu. There you may have to go back to the screen where you choose your sign or something. Not sure, but you should be able to change your sign. After you did, then you'll need to save your game and then close and restart the whole game. You'll see the changes after you loaded your save.

Atronach sign is pretty much required if you want to primarily fight battles with destruction magic, but I dunno if I'd recommend it if this is a first playthrough.

If you want to stick with it, definitely look into getting/making an enchanted item that casts Divine Intervention so you can poof back to an Imperial Cult shrine to restore your magicka in case you run completely out.

ooh now that is a sexy idea. Put a mark down first, go restore your magicka, then recall back...

an easier way to get magicka is learn/make a drain intelligence spell and cast that on your enemy youll get mana back from doing so (just make the spell go 1 point beyond what your intelligence is and itll recharge you fully)

I am having this issue but I did not use atronach. I even restarted twice to make absolute sure I didn't use that birthsign. I am using the mage sign and no mods.

EDIT: I didn't read up enough. To anyone having this issue, you must use a bed to rest as well as not having the atronach birhtsign. "Resting" outside or on the ground/floor will restore your health and stamina but not your magicka (I believe they're actually called spell points in morrowind but don't quote me on that)

yeah the game makes a big thing of using enchanting for more regular spell use. If you want to cast frequently without potions and the like it expects you to use items you put the spells on which then self charge over time or with soul gems
