Can't Rank Up But No Quests Left? - Thieves Guild Problem
I just merged with the fighters guild by killing Hard Heart and becoming the leader.
But Gentleman Jim says to return when I get to the next rank?
I've done all Sugar Lips, Aengoth, Big Helendes quests already. The only one I didn't do was from Gentleman Jim, which was killing the Brothers Lenith as I got the fighters guild quest to kill Hard Heart first so didn't need to.

Have I missed something obvious? Did not doing that one quest to kill the Camonna Tong enforcers mess up my ability to rank up and get the remaining Bal Malogmer quests?

I do have a save I made just before killing Hard Heart incase anything went wrong like this.

For reference my knowledge is based off UESP:
https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Thieves_Guild_Quests

EDIT: I just realised I also killed Eydis Fire Eyes from an earlier quest aswell, so she was hostile to me before I got close to doing the Bitter Cup quest. BUT I did get the quest journal updates, XP and reward for eliminating her regardless so that quest still counted, I realize.

The problem is he won't give me anymore of those quests. He gave me the first ones and then said come back when you are [next rank]

I've completed both Hlervu Locket and Yngling's Ledger

I just hopped back on to see the rank and double checked the topics... I was wrong. I just needed to select a topic about helping a widow lol I got the next quest now... thanks for helping me!
For anyone reading this in the future with the same issue, you need to keep using the conversation topic, "Bal Molagmar" and it will give you the next Bal Quest.
Also for the Third Bal Molagmar quest the journal tells you to go to the library in the St. Olms canton, when in fact the Hall of Wisdom is in the Temple Canton next to it. You will find the deed at the back of the library, under a book.
It doesn't even matter, Gentleman Jim is scripted to disappear after Hard Heart is killed so there's no way to finish the Bal Molagmar if you do them last.

Yeah , once you’ve killed Hard Heart & ticked off the quest with Jim, he gives you the Skeleton Key + Thieves Guild leadership and then ‘goes on a retirement holiday’ or something, meaning that’s impossible to complete the rest of the Bal Molagmer quests . Which don’t give you anything really other than reputation points & some interesting dialogue.

Glad it got solved!

I did want to back track and also do the Bitter Cup quest but I'd played for hours since then and just didn't have that energy to re-do it all.
I played this game for a good year as a teenager, but being younger, I missed alot of stuff and also my save went corrupt so I never did the DLC either. I did the main quest, but was trying to finish the faction stuff when it went corrupt. I did have a massive collection of every item in the game I could possibly take, that was sitting in one of the Legion forts on the ground, so that's probably why it corrupted. I kept everything and dropped it all there. :P

Onto 2022, I am almost 30 and I am just trying to do as much as possible to experience it all again. I'll mop up some more factions and then finish the main quest before finally touching the DLC areas for the first time ever, (excluding last month when I was about level 7, went there to have a quick look as I took boats to get the map markers active, took a boat to Raven rock, the jerks didn't have a boat back. I walked about 20 steps and some woman stabbed me to death with a dagger.)

I'm using OpenMW for the first time and there's no fog so it's amazing to see Solstheim off in the distance when I am on the North coast of Vvardenfell, just letting me know it's there to explore soon!

P.S. My standing in the Thieves Guild is Captain with the Skeleton key. Really strange that I'm not master or whatever haha

I've done all the jobs I can including Bal Molagmar and I;m still not Captain. I keep being told to practice my skill. Do I need a certain rank in sneak and/or lockpicking?

or maybe it is the Faction Reputation

so you get 5 per Quest
also it is variable in this Quest
https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:The_Darts_of_Judgement

also doing Quests in an unfortunate order for other Factions can lower
Faction Reputation due to Guild Conflicts
https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Reputation

If you're being told to practice your skills then you don't have high enough stats to upgrade. Scroll down in your character sheet to guilds and hover over the guild, it will tell you requirements for the next rank
