Best Race/Class for First Playthrough
Looking for suggestions. I've tried to get into Morrowind off and on for years, but have never been able to find a character/class that I've been able to stick with past level 3. I've always wanted to complete the main story and experience the wonderful mystical jank that I've always heard that Morrowind offers.

The best character to complete the game with is one you feel a connection to. If you like the character you create you're much more likely to stick with them for a full playthrough.

Give them a name you like, not just some random meme, joke or auto-generated stuff from a website.

Pick the race you like the most. The individual stats, skill bonuses and abilities are mostly important in the early game, so don't worry about them.

As far as class goes, just make sure you pick your preferred weapon type or spell school as a Major skill. If you make a custom class, also select the speciality that matches the skill. You don't want combat to be a chore early on.

And don't worry about levelling speed. Morrowind can be very uneven in how you progress depending on your actions.

But as long as you have some sort of connection to your character, the only real thing left to do is to immerse yourself in the world, talk to whom you want to and do what you want to. It's IMO the best way to get into the game.

Word on the street is the canon Nerevarine is a male Dunmer.

The Redguard race gets some nice bonuses, though. Probably the best race for a beginner. Should make your life easier.

I usually played as a Khajiit in other TES games, but the physical limitations of no boots or certain helmets got old for me.

I think this is the best answer, really. I keep driving myself insane trying to read up on the best build choices or options because I don't want to gimp myself taking skills I won't really use.

Thanks!

Race you like and any premade class you like
Morrowind isn't a game where you need to min max and play efficiently

Any character can get through Morrowind fine, though in the early game, the main hurdle is having the skills to be able to kill things and take hits.

So long as whatever you choose has a weapon and armour skill as Majors, and you manage your fatigue bar (either through potions, spells, enchanted items or ‘not running all the time’), you should be fine as a Beginner. Skills can also be trained later if you wish to increase something that started as Miscellaneous; so long as whatever you have can get you through early game, it doesn’t really matter if it isn’t ‘optimal’.

If you go Khajiit, Short Blade and Light Armour are good choices, and there’s a few decent short blades for sale in Balmora from various merchants.

Morrowind is NOT the other ES games. Khajiit and Argonian can make extremely good OP'ed builds.
But I think you have had a lot of good advice from the replies here.

I think so too! I'm used to make or break build crafting from other games, and the beginning of Morrowind being more challenging always gave me the impression I needed to have a solid build out the gate or I was gonna struggle.

I'll just.. play the game?.. And have fun?.. Huh..

In my experience so far, as long as you pick a major skill that you'll use the weapon for, the early game is fine. It can be challenging, but explore all your options. And don't forget that training isn't dirty. A trainer will always be there to help you level the skills you need.

Morrowind is very gentle in terms of enemies lvling, there is zero need to calculating build, you can just play the game and pick what you like. But there is non-lvled enemies, so its ok to face a strong opponent right from the start, just leave a mark on a cave and come back later. You can safely become stronger without fighting enemies, its not gonna lock your progress like that, also there are always easy quests for you, just explore and chill, may be you will find daedric in pile of garbage(its legit).

Probably you can mod beast races so it will able to wear all armor. Its not really necessary, but there are some nice artifacts for these slots.

Also dont bother about x2-5 stats for level up, you easily will hit 70 lvl and will get at least 6 stats per lvl, what makes almost 100 for every stat in the end. Just use trainers for spare cash or if its your vibe - turn on "eye of the tiger" and go to the gym )

A little advice - try to play it as its your only life, without savescumming, unless you are learning mechanics. So take every fight seriously and get prepared, use everything you can(scrolls, potions, if you need - run and escape, etc).

The only thing I've been save scumming on is bribing NPC's to raise disposition. I don't want to spend gold to lower disposition. Haha!

Hidden high value treasure mixed with very little waypoint navigation is part of what always draws me to Morrowind. There's a real sense of discovery in this game I haven't been able to get anywhere else.

You didnt lose money, they refused the bribe and thats why it lowered disposition. Also you can predict who will hard to bribe: check they class, race, shame its not taking into account noble status. If they have tendencies for personality and mercantile\speech - dont try to bribe them until you have high stats\a lot of money. You may find it interesting to use everything you can to gain dispostion or live without it cause you cant.

Personally I am a proud ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥/orc.

EDIT: I should clarify that the censored word was poopmer as a joke about their faeces based lore origin.

Personally I love to play a Breton. Their Nedic and Mer heritage opens you up to a litany of RP value and that 50% resist magicka is just too nice imo.

I would say what you feel a connection to the most as well. Personally I kind of wish I created a Dunmer because I love the RP value of a foreigner trying to adopt the native lifestyle and the interactions along with that. I even use a 'Native Ebony Armor' mod which creates Bonemold looking armor but is Heavy Ebony.

I guess on my 'Battlewizard' Gandalf type build I am doing I imagine a wholesome but silent 'Noir from The Boys' who is entirely respectful of the natives but is battling his own demons.
If you are really having trouble make a Nord / Redguard with the lady as your sign it makes for a durable character. Then stat stack endurance by training medium and heavy armors and spear until you get plus 5 per level up. Also do the guilds their early missions help make you flush with cash and are moderately easy.
The quest lines for the main quest don’t get overly difficult at first. Highly recommend you employ what I call the YoYo method of traveling for the later part of the quest. ( you mark wherever you are questing or looting then use an intervention sell your loot or resupply and then recall back to where you just where )

Thanks for the suggestions. I ultimately created a Dunmer character with a modified Battlemage class using the sign of the Apprentice. Blasting baddies with heavy armor and fire has proven to be very fun, so I think I've finally landed on a playstyle I can stick with!
