From the wiki :
Mortar and Pestles are the only required instrument and determine the initial potion strength.
Alembics decrease the magnitude and duration of all negative ingredient effects.
Retorts increase the magnitude and duration of all positive ingredient effects.
Calcinators increase the magnitude and duration of all ingredient effects.
But no, you want the other ones to increase the effects. If you make potions, youre gonna want a retort to make the positive effects better and longer.
If you want an easy good alchemy set to get go to Caldera mages guild, there's a side door on the main floor, go through it and there's stairs that take you way up. Go up there and on top of some crates is an entire master alchemy set, for free. Yes it will count as stealing, but nobody is around to see you take them
