game is incompatible
Game was working with no issues until I updated to windows 11 a few months ago and I haven't been able to play it since because after a few seconds of running the game it just crashes (after windows 11 update). When I searched for the issue it says the game is incompatible

Yeah that's why you never take a "free" update from Windows to the next version

“Free” update? Hahahahahah

Have you tried compatibility modes?

runs on my win 11. did not have to do anything. perhaps you are missing the old dx libraries?

run the game launcher from the game folder and NOT from steam library or icon. sometimes an error msg appears not hidden by steam.

check windows event viewer and reliability history. they may have an error event.

^what? Check windows event viewer? What are you, an IT admin?

I have little experience with windows 11, but i know even win10 does not include the directX libs needed for this game by default. And for some reason the Steam depot does not include the dx9 redist package for this game.

Make sure you have the dx9 redist package installed if you run any dx9 or older games on modern systems

true, if user is on a clean install of win 11 then installed morrowind. if a user has installed many other steam games, libraries may already be there and crash caused by something else. any error msg would help.

Try OpenMW.

Hard to say what the issue is if installing Windows 11 is what broke it. Could be anything and a lot of us still aren't familiar with Win 11.

I'd suggest backing up your save files and then doing a fresh reinstall of Morrowind without any mods and going form there

is m$ is really putting ads in file explorer then i'm going to never go to win11

First the OP.
I personally do not use Win11 (although I have helped a few friends out here with the OS) or 10, but have used/built/diagnosed enough to see a couple of things here.

The game worked on Win10, which was nicely set up for you. Updating to Win11 meant it installed with all its defaults. How many layers of Ransomware and UAC control ???.......
First, verify integrity of game files
Second, ensure your game exe/ save folder/ ini folder are excluded from anti-virus, windows defender etc.
Third, set game etc to run as administrator.
Fourth, run in compatibility mode.
Lastly if that has not worked, download and install (google microsoft) all-in-one runtimes/ directx

They have been doing all sorts of underhanded stuff since Win10. A lot of complaints about what they have been upto.
I run Win7 and do not care how "unsafe" some might consider that. Whenever I manage to afford to get another pc, it is going to run Linux.

If youre using a new CPU (like a 12th gen) you might need to park the efficiency cores in the BIOS.

just checked the replies now, haven't tried anything yet so far but Morrowind is the only game I can't run after updating to windows 11 and all my other steam games have no problem at all. I'll try the suggestions on the replies.

Works fine for me on Windows 11, frankly not a single game has refused to work after I updated to Windows 11, I'm not saying 11 is great, but nothing has gotten worse for me.
