Why which armour weight?
I've come back to MW after a long absence and realize that back in the day I had no idea what I was doing other than swinging a sword. Currently, I'm a heavy armor guy, in part because the Fighter's Guild is one of my guilds. Although I think I might like Medium more, Heavy has a lot more choices. It has the disadvantage of being 'heavy', duh, which limits the amount of loot I can haul, so I used Console to adjust my load carrying capacity - my guy has a couple of loot hauling djinn mules that don't show up in game.
Have been wondering about reasons knowledgeable players favor different weights of

All of the weight classes.

Especially if you're doing a long/exploration run, extreme armor isn't as important as constant effect enchantments, and optimal enchant values are spread across the weight classes (even Unarmored if you minmax and go the shoe route.)

My typical games start with Light, but progress through all three to max them out. By then I have the resources to make a CE Shield set of clothes to train Unarmored while searching for optimal-in-slot enchants so that I end up with:
  • Helm of Tohan (Medium)
  • Daedric Cuirass (Heavy)
  • Nordic Mail Pauldrons (Heavy)
  • Daedric Gauntlets (Heavy)
  • Glass Greaves (Light)
  • Daedric Tower Shield (Heavy)
  • Exquisite Robe, Shirt, Skirt, Pants, Shoes, Belt, Amulet, Rings (Unarmored, feet)

Heavy armor does have more choices than Medium, but Medium has one of if not the best pieces of armor in the game, being the Ebony Mail. Medium Armor is a good mix of weight vs. defense for most of the game, but by end game (or earlier if you're power gaming) light sets like Glass will out class Medium armor defense while also being lighter. Of course with enchantment you can make any set of generic armor godlike. So you can't really pick a wrong armor class. Pick what you like the look of, or what will give you the stat gains you need. Heavy and Medium will raise Endurance and Light will raise Agility
if you get a daedric tower shield from a golden saint that bad boy has a huge enchant you can put fortify strength 1-89ish constant effect. then keep equipping it until the constant effect is in the 80s and boom you got a full 400+ extra pounds of weight i've been carrying around sets of armour before selling them to caldera scamp
