The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Playing the Xbox version today in 2022
First I played Oblivion on the console way back. After this I played Morrowind for the first time and I have to say, the PC interface is godly. It goes to show that Bethesda understood not only the technical side of what a good interface was and how to use a console based one for the given resources at that time.

The problem I have is that I've had trouble modding the game for years on the PC, the only positive thing that the console version does for you is seeing Morrowind for its flaws and accepting them as well seeing the beauty in what it is even though it wasn't made for the Xbox originally to begin with.

Just wanted to share these opinions, has anyone else played the PC version as well as the console?

My first Elder Scrolls game was Morrowind on the old Xbox console. My family didn't really want computer games so we had very few PC games outside of some ancient DOS games somebody gave us.

What I do recall of the Xbox version (non Game of the Year edition) was that it got to a point later in the game where it would constantly crash, especially trying to explore certain areas over others. There were areas I never could go to because it wouldn't allow me into the location without constant crashes. Sadly I ran into a game breaking glitch also my last time I tried to play it where a main story NPC was nowhere to be found :(

Other than that what I recall most is that the old version on console had about the worst Quest log ever LoL I remember having to use a notebook to mark down the quests and reference pages in the log to find further info as we went. What a task :P I hear the GOTY edition greatly improved on that :D

I'm excited to try the PC version but I have other things ahead of it. I'm worried about the controls though as I'm not a PC player. The few games I do have are either made for mostly mouse control (tycoon style games that are point & click) or work with a controller a friend sent. I heard this had bad controller support being so old so I'm unsure how well I'll do but I'm excited to try either way as soon as I can :D

The only experience I have is the game of year edition, so I can't say for sure if that was the case or maybe you killed the npc for the main quest. Ether way that sucks.

For the mouse and keyboard part, I heard there is a way to have the game, gamepad comparable but it requires a mod if your tech savvy. Nexus mods I think.

No, I'd been through the game twice before and I knew where the NPC was supposed to be and they just were never there from the start. I can't remember the name or exact location but it was in a building in or near a town and you had to speak to them to continue the story :( It was after the first town which the name fully escapes me. Sedya something? Think it was the next big town you visit after that. I recall trying several things on my own and doing a search online and I do remember seeing a few others run into the issue as well so I wasn't alone in that. Best info I could find is the NPC likely fell through the floor at some point between starting the game and me actually getting there LoL It was sad though because it was a very early game main quest but I had ran off that time to spend a bunch of time boosting certain skills in advance and all that work was for nothing :(

I've heard there was ways with mods for controller support but I'm honestly against mods. I've been gaming since the 80s and never found a need for anything like that before. I'm sure I'll struggle with the mouse and keyboard controls but I'd rather play games the way they were meant to be played.

As somebody who has played the GOTY edition then, is the quest book easier to navigate and find what your looking for? Normal version it was such a nasty complicated mess! I haven't seen it first hand and only heard it was better organized and easier to navigate.

Yeah the interface is god tier, including the journal has a search function. There are plug-ins for the game as well, you could call them mods but they were made from Bethesda back when the game was released after the GOTY edition. I recommend getting this version if your missing it.

Awesome news about the journal updates! I may miss having to jot things down in a notebook as that was a big part of playing the game in my past but it'll be great not to need to anymore!

I do have the GOTY edition but beyond that I have no idea. For it's anniversary a year or so back Bethesda had it free on their site so I had it through there. It was the only game from their Launcher I had but I never got around to playing. I have several on my Xbox 360 to run through still and I'm working on Graveyard Keeper on Steam so I'll wait until I catch up on a few of those so I'm not overloaded :P
