Yes, I can understand what you are saying.
Morrowind is a lot more laid back about when you do the main quest or any quest really.
A lot of the early quests, like most games are just find/fetch. Just getting you used to the lay of the land and how to travel around.
Most quests for example in Balmorra are find/fetch/convince or kill, only 1 exception I believe is solving a murder.
So many quests in just Balmorra: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Quests_in_Balmora

Morrowind to me has always been more about the story/ lore. Join as many factions as possible. Read the books. What the hell is really going on? Whose side are you on?
Join House Redoran or Hlaalu? bunch of xenophobes. Telvaani are less xenophobic (and much more fun).

Hopefully you will see that, you first have to find out who you really are and that what is happening has been going on for years. It is getting worse, but are you just some assasin here to kill your very best and loyal friend Daguth Ur? Why?

A huge sandbox it is, but also one of the great role playing games made. Instead of rushing to kill everything in sight in a mad impulse, you are given time to think about what is happening.

P.s Skyrim is my least favourite Elder Scrolls, not starting a discussion about that, as I do have over 2000 hours into it.
Also you want a few more fun quest, then find some Daedra quests (loved Oblivions Daedra quests). Maybe using a fork as a weapon sounds fun? lol.

The feel of urgency, largeness, and how the world revolves around the player and treats you as someone special in Skyrim was so annoying for me, it's like reading a mary sue story, I didn't think there's a person who would consciously enjoy that lol

Saw some of your other posts on Morrowind etc. Ask the same question. Why are you playing these games? Has someone manipulated you into thinking you should enjoy them?
To me it seems you need a linear game, with am outright objective and its a case of live or die. You need the adrenaline.

Well...the person who manipulated me into thinking I'd enjoy Morrowind was...me. I *did* enjoy Skyrim, and logged almost 1000 hours messing around with that game, finishing the main quest, all the side quests, just sort of "living" in the game and becoming the Jarl of all the places and so on. I even downloaded quite a few mods that added quests and content and so on. But...I'm not finding the same fun out of Morrowind, and I can't peg why.

It may be a sort of gaming "jet lag" as I just came off playing the Dishonored series, which is very strictly linear and *really* motivates the main character to get things sorted.

---

I wouldn't say I *need* a linear game, but I do prefer a bit more of a shove towards finishing the main quest. In Witcher III (for example), you can run around and exhaust just about every side quest in the game, and it's certainly somewhat sandbox in that way....but the storyline is that this girl you *love like a daughter* is missing, possibly a captive of hostiles, and so on.

There's *motivation* to go find this beloved child if you're in Geralt's headspace at all. You might be able to justify setting down the main quest for side quests to slog side quests to get "needed" gear (like acquiring certain armor or weapons). You might be able to RP pausing the main quest for an immediate personal issue (helping an ally like Ves or Roach). But it never feels, from the story you're given by the game, that it would be entirely "appropriate" to just dump the main quest and be nothing more than the local monster control in some village or something.

---

I suspect my main problem is that -- for lack of a game-given identity like the Witcher or Mass Effect or Dishonored provides -- I'm going to have to work up a "backstory" for my character in my head that allows for some solid sense of loyalty to the Empire and Caius despite the Empire apparently tossing me into prison for some length of time for no given reason only to forcibly repatriate me to Morrowind (also for no given reason). It also just feels...contrived...that I go from "convict-colonist" to "rookie member in the absolute top Imperial spy agency" in the blink of an eye.

Oblivion and Skyrim, the following games in the series, play like Morrowind just with extra refinement, so each one is better than the last!

I think the game is made by people that worked on Dagerfall and they want to recreate the concept with modern technology. From what I've learned, the game world is archipelagos and even the smallest of islands are as big as the game world in Skyrim.

That looks and feels so Morrowind meets Oblivion like. The only game I have seen in a decade that has piqued my interest.
Hopeit turns out as good as it looks and felt.

Hard to say at this point in time its still way to early to know if this game is anything substantial yet.
The only thing going for it so far is that i cannot see any intent on pledges or crowdfunding currently.
Nebgama Mar 27, 2022 @ 3:28pm
which does seem reputable. Going by that trailer it does not really do the game justice in fact taht part with the knight on the horse and the fairy Apparition thing makes me cringe it looks so corny and the sound is off. but the actual concept art in the hub looks good.

If you want an epic storyline that drives you then I would suggest trying out Expansion Tribunal Story, area gives you fewer exploration choices more direct to the location adventure that you find more akin to Oblivion and Skyrim. There also the Faction story that you can delve into like the Great Houses of Telvanni and Imperial Legion, you also have the guilds story line of the Fighters, Mages, and Thieves Guild. I personally enjoy the Great Houses as each story ties back into the main quest as lore goes.

I understand that sandbox games aren't for everyone, I person love the game world and lore driven society of Morrowind than any modern game which is kinda sad for me as I like simple but rich game experiences.
