OpenMW has been a great experience for me. Stability and allows me to use many mods. Of course cant use any lua based mods at this point. I will just have to be patient.

OpenMW works great for me. No complaints whatsoever.

There are lots of quality of life mods out there (shift+click to equip/use an item without dragging and dropping[www.nexusmods.com], Simply click on an item to take it from its container[www.nexusmods.com], Right click to exit out of any menu[www.nexusmods.com]) that don't support OpenMW, so your statement is kind of invalid.

But then again, usually the people who have the willpower to look for such a thing as OpenMW are the one who'd willingly bear any of these inconveniences came from CRPG.

"Back in my day, there were no automatic gold pick-ups and you have to create 10 different accounts just to have all these muling characters, you filthy casuals! You don't know sh!t about the good-old-days of RPG!"

Well openmw has alot of these built in, so your statement is kind of invalid.

Not needed. ESC close dialogue windows in OpenMW unlike vanilla.
COINCELPRO Apr 29, 2021 @ 1:37pm
right click is much more comfortable

yes, needed

It's a matter of habit. Sure, it needed for some people, but not that important.
In vanilla you can't close dialogue windows with a button (ESC just opens the main menu), so you need to install MWSE and scripts.
In OpenMW that feature is already implemented for ESC button, so you don't need to install scripts. The same thing, but done differently.

But what if I want to close this windows with ESC button specifically (more convenient) not just right mouse click. How I can do that in vanilla? And how I can use a gamepad? (a rhetorical questions).

Hey, with OpenMW you can even Zoom by a mouse wheel (or touchpad) and the animation is a bit smoother.
Mouse wheel don't even works for me in vanilla. And this peoples are talking about "conveniences" and MWSE. Yeah, yeah..

Yeah, actually. It's better for it too since you have a higher view distance by default.

Officially supported by Tamriel Rebuilt team.

"OpenMW allows for better performance of Tamriel Rebuilt on modern hardware. It also allows the map to be as big as your mods need it to be, at a higher resolution than MCP" (С)
tamriel-rebuilt.org

It even can became an exclusive to OpenMW in future as Tamriel Rebuilt continue to grow and vanilla have a limits to map size.
The only problem is lack of lua-scripting in OpenMW and it holding it back for now.

Original engine feels old and crappy to play compared to OpenMW. For instance, the FOV option in MGE XE does not seem to actually change the FOV, it just zooms the screen out. OpenMW has modern FOV projection and an FOV slider. It has other nice stuff like enhanced third person animations and mouse wheel support. It has a lot of small things that add up like this to make the game "feel" better and more modern.

Also, as a mod dev I faced with two problems in vanilla.
Main menu is awful, especially in 16:9. After I upscaled the Morrowind menu with waifu2x upscaler to HD, it works like a charm in OpenMW (v0.46+), but I don't find any possibility to replace this textures in vanilla without much of efforts or some kind of weird hacks.

Same with upscaled video. You can't just use h265 codec in vanilla, for example. You stick with outdated Bink codec (which break some localizations of the game, by the way, if you replace bink32.dll with a modified one, that support 720p).

Another thing is that console in OpenMW allow you to copy-paste and you can use scripting to make a game load the way how you like (for example: skip intro, skip menu, add 1K gold and teleport to merchant in Balmora - all automated). That's make development of mods a lot easy to test and develop.

Actually it's useful to use both engines. But OpenMW have more and more advantages over vanilla with an every new update. And vanilla doesn't get a new features except scripting.
Old engine is limited, does not evolve and have no future, if you ask me. From a modders perspective.
Still, at the moment, both engines are on an equal footing. IMHO.
Vanilla has MPC and advancing scripting, but OpenMW has many other features and good compatibility with modern hardware.
