Did you not check out what it was like, gameplay wise etc.
What type of games or game is a favourite of yours and why?

Probably best to move on and never look upon this game ever again.

I had similar experience when i played morrowind for first time in august 2020. I tried to get into it multiple times but very often pulled out. Then i went into the game with a little of the background of morrowind lore (such as factions, great houses, info on terrain etc). I was already familiar with basic elder scrolls gameplay, having played oblivion before. But, what got me into morrowind was once i explored Balmora (Capital of house Hlaalu), Ald Ruhn (Capital of house Redoran) and Sadrith Mora (Capital of House Telvaani). Then i had good immersion in it. Also cultural difference between Outlanders and Dunmer was also fascinating to me. So my advice is spend some hours initially into the game and dont expect anything good or specific in it as the forums or reviews suggest. If this game is for you, you will start to like it eventually (just like me), and dont expect any ideal start or gameplay. Do what you feel comfortable or enjoyable. Morrowind has lot of diversity such as weapons, armors, magic, etc if u are interested in such things.

You should play it a bit more. And since the game don't tell you much what to do, try to follow a plot and listen to what they're trying to tell you. Take a Silt Strider to Balmora, go to Casius Casades, then join the Mages and Fighting guilds. Be prepared to unfair assassins and overpowered rats.

Don't be afraid to start a new game and choose a new character class if you used a broken one.
But if you don't like TES in general and other RPGs, then nothing will help.

It's a proper RPG. You come off the boat as weak as a kitten and can't hit anything with the butter knife you're given. You've got to play the role of a nobody until you can level.

Added to that there's no arrow telling you where to go and who to speak to so you have to behave like you would normally if you'd been thrown into an unfamiliar world.

Most people who love it really enjoy this concept but it's a long way from the more modern "RPGs".

Would it be of any help if I told you that very soon you will become godlike and powerful? You will, but it won't help you stop being lost for 90% of the time :D

Basically if it drives you mad then stop playing it. There's no pleasure in beating your head against a brick wall. But those of us who love the really very good storyline, enjoy the lore and appreciate the idea of truly coming from nothing, will always rave about this game.

Pretty much the same for me.
I had skipped Morrowind as I had a new baby and job around that time.
I played Oblivion and then Skyrim. After my second time through Skyrim, I went back to try Morrowind. Its graphics and such were so old that I decided after about an hour of play in first city area, to delete it.

Now, have been playing it for about a month now and am totally loving it!!

It's too bad I can't get the GEXE to keep the settings but its all good!

Set the morrowind.ini to read only after you tweak it.

When you say "chore to play" OP then this sounds like the same common problem that most new players have. Its because you do not know how to play yet and don't understand the game.

I'll try to finish this game

Complexity and lack of polish is the reason why you dont like it as it bores you?

Well it's difficult to say what can be done to make you enjoy this more other than trying to appreciate the complexity and get mods for where you feel the polish is needed. Some games are not for everyone. Beauty is after all in the eye of the beholder and we all have different standards for games.

this is true, but it is not necessarily an encouragement not to bother at all. it also can be used the other way around, as an encouragement to bother even more. sometimes goodness of a game is nothing but habits, or even mass hysteria. in such cases boredom is mind's natural reaction while trying to know itself better, and this process is not only more important than any game, but also the source of ability to feel entertained.

If you liked Oblivion more you could try Morroblivion. It's Morrowind in the Oblivion engine which means you get the quest markers and it plays more like Oblivion. Edit: I am going to try Morroblivion again but this time I used Wyre Bash to install it as recommended. I might not have installed it quite properly manually last time as this way was easier and likely will be more stable.

This is what RPG games were like 15+ years ago. You are weak, You have no sense of direction and you're confused. But the trick is to talk to NPCs. Talking to NPCs is the best advice you can give any newcomers to morrowind and other Old non mmo RPG games.
