The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

First playthrough as someone who came from Skyrim
Okay. I played Skyrim on PS3. And then again on PS3 after the hard drive failed. Then again on PS4. I had never played any ES games before Skyrim. Eventually I dabbled in Daggerfall but muffed up my character when I made it.

I got this and Oblivion during Christmas sales. I chose to play this first.

At first, I was thrilled, but I also wasn't. It runs well without mods, and the world is very pretty and fun to explore.

On the other hand early game combat can be a pain if you screw up character creation.. Which I did, so I restarted the game with a more well thought out build, and now I'm really having fun.

The main quest is a nice departure. In Skyrim I was just dragonborn off the bat, in this I'll be executed if I tell people about my dreams.. So... Huh.

Anyways, I'm a happy hybrid between long sword warrior, sneaky archer, and theif/explorer mage. I've found that in Skyrim, magic never really drew me in, but there's a lot of spells here that weren't in Skyrim. Such as levitate. I can fly over mountains bich.

The guilds are cool as well, leveling up my skills in magic increases my rank in the guild, which means I actually have to be a decent mage in order to rank up in the mages guild for example. So much more enjoyable than just becoming grand mage for nothing. I feel more connected with my fellow mages, they respect me. Not because I was born with a dragon size magnum dong, but because I helped them with their studies, and trained with them.... And also because I have a Nerevarine size magnum dong.

I am yet to beat the main quest, and I am yet to play the DLC's. So I will move on.

As for Skyrim.. I hold nothing against it, they are very clearly different games. However I think Morrowind has a more unique world, where Skyrim felt like Lord of the Rings. I do like Oblivion/Skyrim combat, but something about Morrowind/Daggerfall makes me feel like my character is actually growing stronger. This applies to magic the most. Even if you have enough magic to cast a spell you still have to be good at that type of magic to actually cast it.

In closing, I'm enjoying Morrowind, it aged well, the combat is much more fun than people made it out to be, and each skill feels far more impactful on gameplay. Eventually I'll get around to Oblivion, but that's a post for another day, on another forum.

Lmao I love the magnum dragon dong bit.

Great read, and you've picked up on many of the things people love morrowind so much for.

Cherish it, because when you get to oblivion, I'm sure you'll be underwhelmed. Oblivion basically has the worst of morrowind and Skyrim. However it does have Bethesda's best expansion (shivering isles) and the guild quests are decent for a play through.

Especially the world of cyrodil was basically a carbon copy of Lord of the rings. They changed all the lore from morrowind that cyrodil was described as (and later explain the retcon that Talos changed the landscape of cyrodil which retroactively changed it so nobody noticed the change). And they gut all the culture and atmosphere in oblivion.

Oblivion will will get you many hours, but it has nowhere near the longevity of morrowind or Skyrim.

Well-met, muth'sera! It's always good to see a new Morrowind player, especially one who understand so quickly why the game has remained so popular even after 18+ years. I have to admit, I envy you, I truly do; you're experiencing this game for the first time, so it's all still new to you.

Now explain to me one thing about Morrowind.

What am I fetching, and why must I die because of it?

"Die, fetcher!"

Yes after doing some research into Oblivion while I'm playing Morrowind, it seems like a good game, though lacking in some fields, but as with Morrowind I suppose I'll have to play it first to find out.

That particular word has never really been translated. But what we do know about it, based on the context in which it's used, is that it's an insult in the Dunmer language.

When Oblivion came out I was initially disappointed with it. After Morrowind it seemed superficial and the bland English countryside feel to the setting after the wild alien Morrowind just made me feel meh. But after a while I began to appreciate it more. The magic and enchanting were a huge improvement to me with the versatility of the spells and enchants you could make.
Alchemy not so much but bearable.

The main plotline nowhere near as good as Morrowind but the guild quests were actual self-contained and well written stories, not the fetch quests of Morrowind, There was also a thread of humour running through it - almost as if they acknowledged that the acting was bad and the animation was really bad; hence the wealth of memes you easily find around :D

I'd also agree the dungeons were poor. Not the first time, but they were obviously copy & paste and after a while you'd recognise the layout.

I would never argue against Morrowind being the superior game - I love Morrowind. But it's Oblivion I go back to playing when I need a fix and I want to have fun, so I'd say it takes all sorts to make a world and Oblivion may not be the failure you expect ........ eventually.

At the end of the day there's no cliff racers in Oblivion. That has to count for something, doesn't it?

Edited this was really in response to some posters saying OP would be disappointed in Oblivion rather than trying to hijack the post :)

I think that even a bad Elder Scrolls game is still better than most RGPs. I'm sure Oblivion will be fine. Morrowind takes alot of time to really enjoy with how the magic and combat works. So Oblivion will probably be easier to get into.

Also I heard about an Argonian who has an affinity for forks. More light hearted than Morrowind.
