these 2 guides look decent for trying the game out.
They have several different mod lists you can also add to it.
I personally went with the graphics overhaul list. Loving it.
"OpenMW is a free, open source, and modern engine which re-implements and extends the 2002 Gamebryo engine for the open-world role-playing game The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Like the Construction Set for the original Morrowind engine, OpenMW comes with its own editor, called OpenMW-CS, which allows the user to edit or create their own mods or original games. Both OpenMW and OpenMW-CS are written from scratch, and aren’t made to support any third party programs that have been added to the original Morrowind engine to improve its functionality.
OpenMW is not a “mod” to Morrowind. It is an entirely different game engine that does not use the original Morrowind.exe in any way."

I use it. It's got the old Morrowind feel and doesn't change the gameplay in any way. It just looks better and plays better. And it's easy to install.

Myself I believe the remake of Gothic will come first (they began on it last year) and I love that game as well.
You can connect it to your Steam game but you have to launch it via the OpenMW icon. On the surface it seems to bypass steam completely. What it does in the background, I have no idea. But I never launch Morrowind via Steam anymore.
Also I'll repeat just in case it's so far up the thread people won't see it. Morroblivion is playable from beginning to end but it isn't Morrowind. It's Oblivion. It changes an awful lot of the things I liked about Morrowind. That's why I uninstalled it and went to MW.
Mind you I still reckon it's worth installing - just for curiosity's sake - so you know what it's like before you bin it :D
I want the one with better graphics.
OpenMW has better graphics by itself, but there are a bunch of mods you can install that will work with it.

I used this mod list (long, and took some fixing on my part, but totally worth it, the game looks amazing.)

OpenMW (no other mods) stepping off the boat:

OpenMW is good but I did not like the way (when it is only supposed to be game engine) that they altered how Birthsigns work. If you use OpenMW be aware that Birthsigns like the Lady which gives +25 Endurance and Personality are not added to your base attributes. So it will not help in increasing you health at level up and it does not help with influencing people.
If you go MGE XE look here for a you tube guide:
