Playing completely vanilla with just OpenMW?
Is OpenMW stable and good enough to play Morrowind without any mods/patches?

Yes. But why not to use Patch for Purists? (a rhetorical).
OpenMW engine is very stable. The game almost never crashes. There may be some bugs, but nothing critical.
OpenMW have a lot of Quality-of-Life features that are not implemented in vanilla (like vector fonts, widescreen, easy to alt+tab, window resize feature, etc, etc)..

I much prefer MGE XE (just for better graphics) and MCP (Morrowind Code Patch).
I never crash, game is stable.
Either OpenMW or MGE XE is good but a patch I believe is really needed. You can (almost always, I cannot) run Patch for Purists and MCP.

OpenMW is great!

I personally also add a couple hundred+ mods to it, but all by itself it is still great.

MGE XE is one of the og for its time and is for those that want the original engine it is essentially a hack to the games exe, a grapichs extender.

OpenMW can do everything MGE XE can except for grass and a few of the pp effects atm....and is a full engine rewrite that is staying for the most part 1:1 with the og engine but fixes a lot of oversight, like bugs and broken mechanics etc, is light years ahead of anything else and tbh its like the game is still being worked on by Bethesda with what they are doing.

OpenMW has also been sanctioned by Bethesda to create their open source engine of the game.
imo as soon as they sort out grass maps then there is no reason to use anything but OpeMW + "insert your mod pack here".

Compatibility with popular mods/tools vs OpenMW https://wiki.openmw.org/index.php?title=Category:Mod_compatibility

and this list is the main reason why some go MGE XE/vanilla engine instead https://wiki.openmw.org/index.php?title=Mod_status

Yep, and this Vanilla (cell textured) inspired water shader makes the game look old style great.

View distance of 1.88, the water shader texture at medium reflect all for perfect performance balance on this laptop atm.

a cool thing with openMW is, that A there's a fork for android, so enjoy it on your phone, or other android device, and B, there's a damn passable VR fork of it aswell, that makes morrowind into a rather neat VR experience, and not in the vorpex style where you still need kb+m or a controller, but fullon vr-controller support and everything.

I go with the OG engine simply for the script mods. That Read Aloud mod is a lifesaver.

I like OpenMW with ViewDistance just enuff to still see Fog, imo the natural Fog in MW makes it magical

Good point. Or set ViewDistance to max and see what happens :-)!

OpenMW is sufficient.
