The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

The text size is too small
I cannot read the small text in game. Have tried changing resolution but that just brings game up in smaller window. Have read that changing font in the ini file to big will solve it. However I cannot find the ini file for this program on my hard disk. Not sure if this is because I bought this from Steam . Does anyone have a sollution? I'm not that technical and have never used mods

look up short guide on how to install open morrowind (openmw) or morrowind code patch on youtube.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/22320/discussions/0/353916838208937310/

this thread has a solution for how to scale up text.
You can also just install MGE XE to base Morrowind

https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/41102

There is an option within to set custom resolutions, scale up text and windows, etc. Its what I use as I have bad eyes, so it helps a ton

For vanilla:
Display -> Renderer -> Menu UI scaling (in MGEXEgui.exe).
for better results you need to install MCP (it have "UI display quality fix" which is important) and "Better Dialogue Font".

For OpenMW (0.45 or newer):
in settings.cfg (in user Documents locarion) or in settings-default.cfg try this options:

# Scales GUI window and widget size. (<1.0 is smaller, >1.0 is larger). scaling factor = 1.2 # Size of in-game fonts font size = 34 # Resolution of TrueType fonts glyphs ttf resolution = 192
It's depends on font that your are installed and used in \resources\mygui\openmw_font.xml

I tried the above with MCP fix and BDF, but it didn't increase font size for me:
Display -> Renderer -> Menu UI scaling (in MGEXEgui.exe).
for better results you need to install MCP (it have "UI display quality fix" which is important) and "Better Dialogue Font".

I then went into the .ini file, made a couple edits and now I can read everything easily; I got the idea from: https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?t=649814
[Fonts]
;Font 0=magic_cards_regular (original setting)
Font 0=century_gothic_big
;Font 1=century_gothic_font_regular (original setting)
Font 1=century_gothic_big
Font 2=daedric_font

Sorry, I should have given more details. I'll have to tell my wife though, someone wanted more details from me! ;)

Go to: Steam client > Library tab: Right click on The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Hover the mouse over: Manage
Select: Browse local files
The path may vary: <DirectoryChoiceDuringInstall>\steamapps\common\Morrowind
File of choice: Morrowind.ini
Make a bakup copy of file.
Edit file with a text editor.
The " ; " prefix will comment out the line (not execute it).
Save and close file.

Edits: Replaced original lines with new lines:
[Fonts]
;Font 0=magic_cards_regular (original setting)
Font 0=century_gothic_big
;Font 1=century_gothic_font_regular (original setting)
Font 1=century_gothic_big
Font 2=daedric_font

The font is a bit plain, but large. I can read on the TV from across the room without my glasses now. The fixes listed by Conkwer made everything less blurry, but for some reason MGE XE wouldn't scale the text size. If I remember right, the MCP fix may need to be selected manually.

No, it's MCP default option. So, everybody, probably, installed this fix already if the game is patched with MCP.

That is strange, for sure.
Older versions of MGE XE may have bugs with this feature, as I know.
You need to use v0.11.6 (or newer) if not using it already.

I have no problem with UI scaling on any PC that I have MGE XE installed, by the way. Work flawlessly.
This may be a problem with the video card drivers. Everything is fine on GeForce.

dgVoodoo2 can scale UI too, but not sure if that a good way to play Morrowind. Probably, not. Not the best solution, but playable.

Thanks for clarification on things Conqwer.

I just tried v0.11.6 with scaling up to 4.00 (max), still no change. It is probably something wrong on my end, especially since I'm new to MGE XE, and have little experience adding mods.

Ah praise Azura! I finally got the UI scaling to function in MGE XE. I had to make the scaling change, close/open cycle MGE XE, then launch the game. I just don't see a save settings button in MGE XE?

I also combined it with a different font selection which is easier to read than the magic card font. It also doesn't overrun the Spellmaker controls when crafting Fortify Attribute (unlike the big version). It is called "century_gothic_font_regular". The supported fonts are located at:
...<UserDefinedInstallPath>\steamapps\common\Morrowind\Data Files\Fonts

There no save button (It should be saved immediately).
By the way, you not need MGE XE GUI for this as all options are in .\mge3\MGE.ini
You can change MGE.ini in notepad and edit "UI Scaling=1.0" option here manually

kk, thnx
Smaller resolution, then simply hit alt enter if it's not fullscreen

Thanks everyone for trying to help. I eventually found the ini file and changed font from regular to big but it says when game launches no such font exists. Kinda given up now as it's too much like hard work. Have tried to get rebate from Steam but unfortunately did not start to play the game until two weeks after I bought it so no refund. Advice to anyone buying game here - test it within first two weeks.
Why you are not wanted to use MGE XE is beyond me.
Nothing especially hard. Just set Menu UI scaling higher and that's it.
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/41102?tab=files (MGE XE)

You can use OpenMW that I use, font there is already much better
https://oketado.ru/files/shared/OpenMW-launcher-(0.46s)-20200805.7z
(you need to copy files to Morrowind and that's it)
Use it only if you are total noob and can't configure OpenMW by youself
