It's still great. Compared to the other TES games, longtime fans of the series still rank it as one of the best, if not THE best. Even in it WASN'T on sale, I would encourage you to buy the game. Age is not a reliable indication of a game's quality, and this game is proof of that.

what makes it so good compared to newer elder scrolls games if you dont mind me asking? i would assume newers games in the series would improve on their predecessors shortcomings

If you keep comparing it to the modern games then you better give it a pass.

Part of the reason it's so beloved is that the setting is so different than the usual fantasy-RPG. Most Western fantasy-RPG's at the time were cookie-cutter settings, strongly influence by medieval Europe, with maybe one or two things different. Morrowind was one of the first fantasy-RPG's to make gamers look at the landscape and go "What the...?" in amazement. For example, there's a faction that grows its buildings using giant mushrooms; this faction is joinable.

Another reason it's so beloved is that following the story is un-needed. Other fantasy-RPG's have some reminder of keeping you following the main story. Morrowind doesn't care. You can follow the main story if you want, but there's no constant reminder. You can go off on your own and not follow the main story unless you want to do so; it's all up to you.

These are just two reasons, and there's lots more. Check the reviews for other examples.

It's not up to the level of oblivion and Skyrim and it managed to be dated in a lot of ways when it came out, but it's still possible to have fun in it.

I recommend getting it as part of the currently offered bundle. It has a different feel. Depending on your taste you will either love or hate the fact that enemies do not level with your character.

No. If you're not involved in lore and a fan of drug-induced Kirkbride stuff, it's not worth the hassle imo.
Morrowind is a huge elitist circlejerk. Play Skyrim which is a much better game in almost all aspects.
Who hurt you?

Well he's right, it's somehow good to play if you played it when you were young or if you're into old rpgs but if you're new to this kind of games you better avoid it.. It's slow, ugly and "difficult", if you go from skyrim to morrowind you just won't like it :/

Nah, it's just an old school RPG while Skyrim is MUCH more of an Action game (barely an Action-RPG according to some).

If you think this will be like Skyrim, or even Oblivion, then yeah you will be disappointed. But you should probably do your research before buying either way.

Morrowind is an old school RPG. It actually makes you think, you have to read and listen. There are no "go this way" markers.

Skyrim holds your hand for the entire game posing no challenge.
Oblivion tried but was just aimed at console gamers

Morrowind is 18 years old and it looks old. But it makes you think. The leveling system is a nightmare but when you learn it you master it.
If you want cheap frills look away, If you want to invest hours of your time and like old school stuff go for it.

Hell yes it is good. It's a better game in every way than the rest of the series.

Daggerfall is #1 sorry.

I would suggest you try Morrowind with an open mind. Give it 8 or 10 hours of your time. Nothing ventured = nothing gained, so even if you find Morrowind not to your personal taste, you will still have gained valuable knowledge and can move on.

XP is everything! :-)

Also, if you play Morrowind do so via OpenMW.

That way you'll have MUCH better performance, widescreen support, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, and did I say much better performance? I did? Well it bared repeating. (as base Morrowind does NOT run well, OpenMW does)
