Part of the reason it's so beloved is that the setting is so different than the usual fantasy-RPG. Most Western fantasy-RPG's at the time were cookie-cutter settings, strongly influence by medieval Europe, with maybe one or two things different. Morrowind was one of the first fantasy-RPG's to make gamers look at the landscape and go "What the...?" in amazement. For example, there's a faction that grows its buildings using giant mushrooms; this faction is joinable.
Another reason it's so beloved is that following the story is un-needed. Other fantasy-RPG's have some reminder of keeping you following the main story. Morrowind doesn't care. You can follow the main story if you want, but there's no constant reminder. You can go off on your own and not follow the main story unless you want to do so; it's all up to you.
These are just two reasons, and there's lots more. Check the reviews for other examples.
Nah, it's just an old school RPG while Skyrim is MUCH more of an Action game (barely an Action-RPG according to some).
If you think this will be like Skyrim, or even Oblivion, then yeah you will be disappointed. But you should probably do your research before buying either way.
Skyrim holds your hand for the entire game posing no challenge.
Oblivion tried but was just aimed at console gamers
Morrowind is 18 years old and it looks old. But it makes you think. The leveling system is a nightmare but when you learn it you master it.
If you want cheap frills look away, If you want to invest hours of your time and like old school stuff go for it.
Daggerfall is #1 sorry.
XP is everything! :-)

That way you'll have MUCH better performance, widescreen support, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, and did I say much better performance? I did? Well it bared repeating. (as base Morrowind does NOT run well, OpenMW does)
