Where can I safely store items?
I am very new at this game. I have looked up where to safely store items in the game, but the information I've found is very contradictory. Some say bodies are safe, some don't. Some say containers are safe, some don't. Some say just leaving it on the floor is ok, and some say that it absolutely isn't.

I have taken over the house of the man who killed the tax collector in Seyda Neen, so I have access to an interior with containers.

My main questions are:

Which is the correct way to store items?

Is there a way for me to verify the safeness of the spot?

Thank you

Check UESP for your information. 99% of the time, the information you find there is going to be correct.

That site states that with a few exceptions, if you can put stuff into a container, that stuff will remain there indefinitely. The one exception to that are dead bodies. Those will disappear after a few days, unless they have no "Dispose of Corpse" option when you interact with them. Bodies that don't have that option are safe for storage purposes. If you want to store stuff in a house, try Hlaalo Manor in Balmora.

AFAIK items dropped in houses never despawn, i know there's a free manor somewhere in Balmora if you want to seek it out.

Do you know how I can check this? i.e how many days does it take for items to despawn normally if it isn't in a house?
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I use Hlaalo Manor in Balmora as a base of operations. The corpse on the floor never despawns and has infinite storage, so I keep my alchemy stuff in it.

You can drop items anywhere and they never despawn.
