How does enchanting work?
Hello, I tried Enchanting a Ebony sword. The number on top of the screen is 12/12 as for how powerfull enchantment you can have on it, 13/12 or more just fails.

And I noticed that different people give you different results. The Enchanter in Balomora would give me 36-50 fire damage+ soul trap for 1sec as maxing the 12/12 number. But the guy at Ald'ruhn made the same enchantment make the top number 17/12, and also the cost increesed. My problem is that I stole the soul gem from balomora mages guild and she turns hostile when i use her service and that soul gem.

Is it because some are more skilled at enchanting than others`? and who do you use for your enchanting? Also, do you know a good place to find soul gems to use`?

UPDATE:
Its not a difference between Balmora and Ald'ruhn after all. Its just a conincidense that I put in the magic effects the other way around. But then what is the difference in these 2 swords?

Its a difference in "effect order".
-Fire dmg + soul trap = High cast cost
-Soul Trap + Fire dmg = Low Cast cost

Does the order of effects matter at all or not?

I don't think there's any practical difference in effect, go for the cheaper one. =)

The game just calculates costs for multi-effect enchantments strangely: to get the lowest-cost enchantment always put the effects in order from "smallest" to "largest". "Larger" effects cost more soul/charge & gold. Can take a bit of trial and error to work out the right order sometimes. >_<

Oh, and it may be best to set the soultrap duration to 1 second. I'm not sure how 0-duration effects like that are processed...

I would make the damage set at same duration.. Im not even sure if this combination would work to trap souls honestly, never tried it. Just save the game then make the sword and go try it out. If it doesnt work then reload it. Im pretty sure itll work though.

You could try making a longer duration soul trap of like maybe 5 seconds and set it as a cast on use and then just activate it right before you kill something. But honestly the sword seems impractical to me. You might get 2 or 3 uses out of it before the charge runs out.

I got Soul Trap for 10 sec and 30-56 fire dmg for 1 sec cast on hit, not on use.It costs 8 charge per hit and I have 300 max charge with a larger soul i found so i can swing it about 30 times before it needs a recharge. It cost about 10k to enchant it.

I trap souls all the time, and kill most enemies along the road in 1 hit.

I do have one more Ebony sword, but if i find a super soul gem, ill save it for a deadric sword
Caethyril Aug 17, 2018 @ 7:29am
Note that 400+ charge soul gems (e.g. from Golden Saints) can be used to make constant effect enchants! Either way, daedric stuff is a great choice, lots of capacity. ^_^

One more thing I'd recommend is making sure you have either a secondary weapon or some fire resistance (potions?) for dealing with spell-reflecting enemies. It's no fun getting killed by your own weapon. x_x

Oh I see. Well in your screenshots it shows you have cast on strike.

on hit, on strike... same thing. he's not talking about a labor dispute :P

He said cast when used in the reply though, thats not the same as cast on strike. Was that just a simple slip up then?

Oh wait, I see he edited it.

What enchantment effects do you people like on your weapons then?

A weak self restore fatigue effect on strike is nice. That way you can just keep fighting for an extended time without resting or using potions.

Before you set the magnitude of your enchants, first put on what enchants you want. The first point of an enchant is free after that and there is no oddly calculated enchant values put on your weapon. After you get the attributes you want, mess with magnitude and such.
This will help greatly when you go to do constant effect restoration enchants, as the values will be easier to work with.

One other tip: If you intend to use "Fortify x" constant effect, set it to 1-z(z being highest enchant able to be put on your gear). You can then keep re-equipping your gear until you get the desired effect of the enchant. If you do "Restore attribute", it will restore at random values within its magnitude.
