Is MGO still the ''go to'' starting mod?
I heard they made a few new Morrowind overhaul mods recently. Back when I first played I used some kind of graphics overhaul which I think was called MGO, which had like 80 QoL mods mixed in with a graphical update and had a nice pick-and-choose interface about it. Is that still the best starter mod if I was looking to play this again?

Most of the graphics mods that come with it are still okay, but the Morrowind Patch Project, Morrowind Code Patch, and MGE XE are outdated. You can just install newer versions of these over MGO, and you'll be good.

if you mean MGSO, it is outdated, broken and badly optimized (even according to other more experienced modders). you'd have to install an updated version of MGE XE over the old one that MGSO uses, potentially creating conflicts, why bother when you could just install a clean & up to date MGE XE on the get go. plus most of the mods used in it are oudated since it's in a 2012 pack, so you'd need to look for patches to fix the various old mods inside it to avoid conflicts with other additional mods you might use.

all you really need for QoL and graphical update, without changing the game too much is MGE XE + MCP and then add on to your taste with nexusmods from that base. MGE XE is a must have depending on player, for me, widescreen and borderless windowed mode made it the go-to starting base for Morrowind.

- for further tweaking you can use the updated STEP guide[wiki.step-project.com], you don't really need to install every single mod on there (like some would say), you may pick and choose from the recommendations to your liking, installing mods is made much simpler with a modmanager that downloads and unpack the mods for you.

- alternatively you can try openMW if you don't want to mod much. openMW is an engine reimplementation still in development. though i'd still recommend MGE XE instead of openMW because of better mod compatibility atm.

- if it is not your first playthrough, i'd also suggest giving Morrowind Rebirth a try if you want an updated all in one overhaul in 2018. as it's an overhaul, it may change a lot of the game, but for subsequent playthroughs is definitely worth a go. compatible with both MGE and openMW, MGSO is not recommended however: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/37795

if you mean MGSO, it is outdated and broken. use MGE XE + MCP instead and then add on to your taste with nexusmods Manager from that base.

It is somewhat outdated, but it's not broken. The big reason why MGSO was made is that it's much easier to install it than finding and picking a bunch of texture and graphics mods by yourself.

I put in about a 100 hours in a playthrough last month and used MGSO. As long as you update a few of the mods, it works completely fine and looks good, and is much less of a hassle than installing graphics and texture mods separately. The only issue I've had was with the new Lord's Mail model and texture, and that was fixed by installing another armor mod instead of what MGSO came with.

@OP: Asus' guide looks pretty solid. I'd recommend it.

The OP already chose his answer, and it wasn't yours. Sorry.

oh and this mesh error This is an old error, go to your games local files and delete Furn_De_Table_03 from Data Files\Meshes\f\ (maybe drag it to your desktop just in case)... and dont worry about the glass armor errors

The MGSO Temporary Patch [www.nexusmods.com] addresses both those issues.

This is honestly making it harder to pick lol. I picked the first answer because I thought it was the definitive answer, but I may need to change that? Unsure....

Honestly, if you want to play with MGSO, then go for it. It's still good and is the easiest way to get the game looking good without much hassle.

Check out Asus' guide. I didn't use it myself, but it looks like a pretty comprehensive list, and is fairly easy to follow.

it was only picked because it was the first answer and OP thought it was definitive. i don't really care about whos get chosen, its his choice.

btw even that chosen answer is mistaken, saying MGE XE and MCP are outdated, where in fact, it was updated in 2017-2018, compared to MGSO which was last updated in 2012..

it's misleading to new players when you don't get information right. and i am merely pointing out a better and up to date solution, which is highly recommended elsewhere as well.

MGSO can be updated to the updated MCP and MGE XE. Easy peasy... I'm not againt updating MGSO. That isn't the debate.

You're telling people not to use MGSO.

... and I'm here to say MGSO is fine to use.

It is misleading to new players when YOU don't get information right. In your first post you tell people MGSO is outdated and broken (half truths don't tell the whole story), but you don't even bother to let people know MGSO can be UPDATED with the newer MCP and MGE XE. You sir, are the one that misleads.
